Democratic congressmen Ed Markey and Stephen Lynch will face off in a primary on April 30 in the race to fill the Massachusetts Senate seat vacated by new Secretary of State John Kerry.

Stephen Lynch became the second candidate to officially enter the race to fill the Senate seat vacated by new Secretary of State John Kerry, following his fellow Democratic Congressman Ed Markey. After President Obama’s selection of John Kerry as Secretary of State, there’s a lot of interest in the senior senator’s seat.
With U.S. Senator John Kerry as President Barack Obama’s pick for Secretary of State, it’s anyone’s guess who will run for the seat in a special election next summer. Kerry was nominated by Obama on Dec. 21. If Kerry is appointed, Governor Deval Patrick will appoint an interim senator, who will be named to the position before the special election. Names have already been dropped locally and from afar, including actor and Cambridge native Ben Affleck, who said he is not interested in running for the seat Kerry has held since 1985. With news that Sen. John Kerry may be tapped as Pres. Obama's nominee for Secretary of State, Markey said he will "seriously consider" making a run if the vacancy is announced.
Congressman Ed Markey told reporters he was "seriously considering" a run for Senate, should Sen. John Kerry be tapped as President Barack Obama's nominee for secretary of state. Markey made the remarks to reporters at Malden City Hall, following a press conference regarding the city's proposed minor league baseball park. "I hope that John Kerry does become secretary of state; he will be a great secretary of state," Markey said. "When that announcement is made I will seriously consider looking at ... (the seat). President Obama said today that U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice had withdrawn from consideration to be the next Secretary of State, saying conservative opposition would make her candidacy too "disruptive." With Rice out of the picture, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry is seen by many to be the frontrunner to replace current top diplomat Hillary Clinton. On Huffington Post and elsewhere, there has been speculation that the reason for such fierce opposition to Rice was to get Kerry into the Obama Administration and get back the U.S. Senate seat recently lost by Republican Sen. The Washington Post is reporting that President Obama is considering appointing Massachusetts U.S. Sen. John Kerry as the Secretary of Defense. There was speculation Kerry would be the next Secretary of State. Either way Kerry's move to possibly become a member of Obama's cabinet will open up his current seat. Should he be appointed, a special election would be held to finish out Kerry's term, which expires in 2014. A bus was scheduled to leave the senior center at about 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
Senior citizens are expected to board a bus in Malden Wednesday morning and head into Boston where they’ll join what is promised to be a massive rally to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. The protest is being held as a congressional “super-committee” is putting together a proposal to reduce the federal deficit. Senator John Kerry is on that committee and the march is expected to go by his office as well as Senator Scott Brown’s office. Similar buses are expected to leave from many communities in Greater Boston, according to Jason A.
