Subway, Bus Service May Extend To 2 AM on Weekend

YOUR TURN: Would you use later subway service? Hate it? State transportation officials are considering plans that would extend most weekend MBTA subway services to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday

It's a complaint we've all heard about the local nightlife: the country's oldest subway system doesn't run much later than 12:30 a.m., even on the weekend. But WCVB-TV reports that could all change for riders this year, thanks to a pilot program proposed by state transportation officials that would keep the T open until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights. "If additional operating funds are identified, major bus routes and the most heavily traveled portions of the subway and light rail systems will be considered as part of a pilot program," MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said in a statement. The changes would require legislative approval and a likely tax or fee increase, according to the report. You can read details about other proposals - …

Um... yeah. I'm all about the drinkin', dancin' and gallivantin'. I not only take the T after midnight, I occasionally walk home from Malden Station afterward if there are no cabs at the stand. Never. Shot at. Once. Oh yeah, I'm all kindsa badass. ;)   more ›

Longer School Days Are Coming to Select Massachusetts Schools

Massachusetts is one of five states to add 300 hours of class time every year for certain schools. Will it help?

Will more time in school translate into greater student achievement? Federal and state officials are announcing today that Massachusetts, along with Connecticut, New York, Tennessee and Colorado, are participating in a pilot program to find out. Csmonitor.com reports that the program will add at least 300 hours of learning time in some schools starting next fall.  Fall River and Lawrence are the two Massachusetts towns included in the pilot project. Boston.com reports that this new program adds to an effort launched six years ago in Massachusetts to lengthen the school day in several school districts. The pilot program reportedly will last three years and include almost 20,000 students in 40 schools with an eye to bringing in more schools …

Well said Kay. To expand, "all" our children goes on to include children with severe autism, down syndrome -- every disability, seen and unseen. Much more complicated than we think.   more ›

YOUR TURN: Real vs. Artificial Christmas Trees

It's a decision families make every year - are you willing to withstand the cold, sap and needles necessary for an 'authentic' Christmas?

Sure, everyone appreciates some good holiday decor. But have you ever been tempted to take it easy on yourself and purchase an artificial Christmas tree? Purists won't go near them, but for others, the thought of chopping down a tree - leaving needles, sap and leaking water in your living room - is not their idea of a happy holiday.  Despite the hassle, real trees outsell their artificial cousins by more than a 3-to-1 margin each season, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. Bear in mind, of course, artificial trees can be reused every year. Readers, what do you think? Are you undertaking the Griswold family tradition this year, or are will an artificial tree do the trick for your family?

as silly as a stop sign on Salem St. sounds they probably put the sign there to slow cars down and discourage it from being a cut through. Cars whip up and down that street all the time.   more ›

YOUR TURN: Should Malden Ditch Blue Bags?

The unpopular program is being reviewed by a mayoral task force. What's your best idea for replacing the program?

Pay As You Throw is one of the most frequent gripes our readers have about city hall - whether the cost or the flimsiness of the bags, citizens have long clamored for an alternative to the model. Mayor Gary Christenson made campaign promises to change the system, and told readers during his Monthly Online Forum he had recently established a task force of interested citizens to brainstorm ways of changing the system. He added their alternative proposals will be presented to the public sometime before the end of the year.  But, until then, we wanted to ask you - what's your best solution for dealing with Malden's trash? Is there a nearby city you think does it better? Something completely off the wall? Share your ideas with decision-makers …

As far as the recycle bins go, you don't have to use the stoopid and woefully to small bins the city provided. They have stickers that you can place on barrels , one for paper and one for mixed (plastic and cans). Yeh you have to sort it where no other city does, but it is better than the small recycle bins. I haven't any idea why the city did not put one in the original mailing that included one…   more ›

YOUR TURN: Where Did You Go This Summer?

Staycation? Vacation? Either way, upload photos of your summer travel experience.

This summer we were going to venture out on a 25-city, four-week tour of Europe, but we just felt like the whole spending-money-like-a-rap-star thing was really played out.  OK, so the 2012 summer budget really only allowed for sitting in front of the AC eating a pint of ice cream.  Turns out we are in the minority, because AAA travel club reports that the number of Americans traveling has been on a slow and steady increase for the last two years. AAA's travel data from July 4 of this year showed a 4.9 increase from last year for people trekking more than 50 miles from home to celebrate. "Americans are still in love with their vacations and they are finding ways to finance those vacations despite the slow-growing economy," said Cynthia …

Time Map of the MBTA: Just How Long Is Your Commute from Malden?

A new map of the T shows not the geography of stations, but the time it takes between them.

If you've ever thought about moving to get a better commute, a new "time map" of the T might help you. Designer Peter Dunn created a map of what the MBTA subway system would look like if it was plotted by time — not by geography. For instance, a Malden Square resident trying to get to Downtown Crossing can expect about a 13-minute trip, according to the map.  Here's some of what jumped out at Dunn when he studied his map: Seeing all schedules in a single map shows that not all Green Line branches are created equal. It takes just as long to get from downtown to Boston College on the B line as it does to get to Riverside on the D line, despite being about half the distance. And even though they’re just a few blocks apart, Chestnut Hill Ave (…
