It's a complaint we've all heard about the local nightlife: the country's oldest subway system doesn't run much later than 12:30 a.m., even on the weekend. But WCVB-TV reports that could all change for riders this year, thanks to a pilot program proposed by state transportation officials that would keep the T open until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights. "If additional operating funds are identified, major bus routes and the most heavily traveled portions of the subway and light rail systems will be considered as part of a pilot program," MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said in a statement. Massachusetts is one of five states to add 300 hours of class time every year for certain schools. Will it help?
Will more time in school translate into greater student achievement? Federal and state officials are announcing today that Massachusetts, along with Connecticut, New York, Tennessee and Colorado, are participating in a pilot program to find out. Csmonitor.com reports that the program will add at least 300 hours of learning time in some schools starting next fall. Fall River and Lawrence are the two Massachusetts towns included in the pilot project. Boston.com reports that this new program adds to an effort launched six years ago in Massachusetts to lengthen the school day in several school districts. Sure, everyone appreciates some good holiday decor. But have you ever been tempted to take it easy on yourself and purchase an artificial Christmas tree? Purists won't go near them, but for others, the thought of chopping down a tree - leaving needles, sap and leaking water in your living room - is not their idea of a happy holiday. Despite the hassle, real trees outsell their artificial cousins by more than a 3-to-1 margin each season, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. As far as the recycle bins go, you don't have to use the stoopid and woefully to small bins the city provided. They have stickers that you can place on barrels , one for paper and one for mixed (plastic and cans). Yeh you have to sort it where no other city does, but it is better than the small recycle bins. I haven't any idea why the city did not put one in the original mailing that included one… more ›

A new map of the T shows not the geography of stations, but the time it takes between them.
If you've ever thought about moving to get a better commute, a new "time map" of the T might help you. Designer Peter Dunn created a map of what the MBTA subway system would look like if it was plotted by time — not by geography. For instance, a Malden Square resident trying to get to Downtown Crossing can expect about a 13-minute trip, according to the map. Here's some of what jumped out at Dunn when he studied his map: Seeing all schedules in a single map shows that not all Green Line branches are created equal.
