The city got a serious Christmas gift this year, with some star power to boot: $10,000 for the city's Teen Enrichment Center from actor and Dorchester native Mark Wahlberg. Malden resident Scott Saia, who organized last weekend's first annual "Home for the Holidays" tournament, works for the Wahlberg family and said he told them about his efforts to raise money for the city's new teen center. "A lot of my own drive to create the tournament and make it the success it became was inspired and influenced by seeing the Wahlbergs' passion for helping kids and the community, and being involved in their work myself and seeing their affective results firsthand," Saia wrote. The center, which receives funding from Malden taxpayers, is also tasked …

Mayor Gary Christenson said teens should enjoy use of the center by next month.
Contractors are chipping away at paint and preparing other renovations to bring the city's new teen enrichment center to life next month, thanks to the work of volunteers and political support from the mayor's office. The 5,500 square foot center, located across from Malden High School at 1 Salem St., will provide structured activities, homework help and other activities to keep kids busy after school. Mayor Gary Christenson signed a three-year lease for the building earlier this month. While the city will pay for rent and staffing costs, money for activities will be raised by a 501(c)3 non-profit organization affiliated with the center. Some city councilors criticized the mayor for signing a lease for the city's new teen center without seeking approval from the council; Christenson said his administration worked with the councilors throughout the summer.
Update: Councilor Kinnon responds via e-mail: "At issue was not did the Mayor have authority to negotiate but whether he had the legal right to obligate the city to more than one year without express consent of the City Council prior. The amount being over $25,000 per year really calls this into question.(this is a high threshold in most State bidding issues) The intent of the Ordinance below is very clear. Note also the city purchasing agent was not involved nor had he seen a copy of the lease before it was signed...The city solicitor also did not see a copy of the lease before it was signed nor did she review it prior. Clearly there was a lack of basic control which is a true issue for this city. The lease itself does not have a …

While pending city council approval, officials say the facility could open as early as September of this year, and include entertainment and enrichment programs for area teens.
After reviewing several properties near Malden Center, a task force created by the Mayor's office recommended One Salem St. as a location for a proposed teen center that could be open as early as September, officials said Tuesday. The 18-person task force, which included some Malden High School students, considered five facilities, including 22 Pleasant St., the first and second floor of 46-50 Pleasant St. and 379 Main St., but identified the Salem St. location as the most cost-effective for the city. “The location is just marvelous,” task force chairperson Cathy MacMullin said during a press conference Tuesday. “The owner is looking forward to negotiating with the mayor's office.” The proximity to both the high school and public …
