Would you or a student you know sign a petition against instituting school uniforms in Malden public schools? Parent Robin Farren has started a campaign of students and families opposed to the idea.
Students, and Parents of Students in the Malden Public School System, I'm sure you have heard of the uniform mandate at the Linden School, and the possible uniform mandate throughout all of the other Malden Public Schools. And like me, you are probably sick to death of the subject, so I will try and be brief. Many parents & teachers are very much against requiring uniforms in public school. The American Civil Liberties Union is adamantly against uniforms too. Most of us were fine with the current dress code, and feel the time, energy and funds should be spent on more worthy and educational endeavors. Even Principal Bransfield & Superintendent DeRuosi admit there are as many studies that are pro uniform as valid studies against them. So, …

School uniforms will be required for Linden School students beginning in the 2013-2014 school year, a letter sent home to parents read Tuesday. The Linden S.T.E.A.M. Academy governing board approved the initiative in a 10-3 vote, Principal Richard Bransfield wrote. A sub-committee has been formed that will develop particulars about the policy. “I applaud the board on not so much its decision, but the hard work and courage it took to bring this initiative to a vote,” he wrote. “This is the first step forward in using the autonomies that have been granted to the governing board as a result of us becoming Malden's first innovation school.” The letter adds that “there has been much research to show that school uniforms are not an added burden …

The Malden School Committee will hold a public hearing Monday evening about the proposed uniform survey results. What do you think about the idea?
The Malden School Board will hold a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. Monday to discuss a proposal to bring mandatory school uniforms to Malden Public Schools. The hearing will address a survey conducted of students and parents, and will also allow public comment for the record. Residents can still take the survey through the rest of the day Monday, but we wanted to ask our readers: what do you think of school uniforms? Are you a student at Malden public schools? A parent? Hi, Donna. With all due respect, I don't think we can know what the majority of parents and teachers want unless/until all parents and teachers get a vote. The present consensus was taken by the members of the Governing Board, not the entire staff or the full body of Linden parents/guardians.
