PHOTOS: Hawk Sighting in Malden Square Monday

A hawk was seen perched in a tree in Malden Square Monday morning.

A brown hawk was perched in a tree on the Pleasant Street side of the senior center at about 7:45 Monday morning. Previous hawk sightings have been reported at the Davenport Estate and Malden High School, both on Salem Street. "We actually picked one up a few weeks ago," Animal Control Officer Kevin Alkins said. "They take care of the pigeon problem." While there have been some instances of hawks attacking small pets and even people, Alkins said such behavior is extremely unusual for the breed.  "They are pretty limited to pigeons, rodents rats...never heard of a cat or anything like that (in Malden)," he said. "They serve a purpose in ridding downtown of dirty birds and things like that."  Atkins sent along pictures of a rehabilitated …

Bank of America To Close Pleasant Street Branch

The bank is closing four branches in the state and one is in Malden.

The oldest Bank of America branch in the city will close on Friday, June 22, according to a letter the bank sent to customers this week. The branch at 46 Pleasant Street, housed in an old-style bank building in Malden Square complete with period sconces at the entranceway, will close at 2 p.m. on that day.  The letter offers no explanation for the closing. However, an article in Saturday's Boston Globe says the bank is closing four of its 270 branches in the state "as part of an effort to streamline its national network of offices, according to regulatory filings." The three other branches that will close are in Ware, Framingham, and Springfield, according to the Globe. Meanwhile, Bank of America stock surged 22 percent this week, …

Expensive to run this branch? It's more like not enough customers! It's a sad thing that we have 60K residents in this city, and those numbers are not enough to support this business. I think this is more to do with the demographics in this city: a growing number of transients and low-income folks.   more ›
