Local Businesses Reach Out To Help Mini-Mart

Electricians to carpenters are coming out to help redesign the store - which saw two armed robberies in just three days last week - to help keep its owners safe.

Local business owners are coming together to support a convenience store that, as recently as last week, said they were closing shop after two back-to-back armed robberies. A number of local Malden businesses, from electricians to lighting specialists to carpenters, will be helping Malden Mini-Market owner Dharam Jain rearrange the store to increase safety and make the store less of a target for crime. Suspect Threatened to Shoot Cashier

The victim and a witness to the double armed robberies at Malden Mini-Market this week speak to the press. ALSO: Mayor Gary Christenson responds.

Cashier Ram Thapa had only been on the job for about a month when two armed robberies at his uncle's convenience store convinced him to quit this week. Thapa, a 24-year-old biotech student at Quincy College, offered to help at the family store soon after another part-time employee quit for unrelated reasons. His uncle, 69-year-old retiree Dharam Jain, said business at the Malden Mini Market “has not been great," but that these recent robberies - coupled with “dozens and dozens” of incidents over the past decade - finally compelled him to close the store after 12 years in business.   "He hit me so hard...I couldn't see anything."  Thapa said he knew convenience stores were typical targets for armed robberies, but never thought it could …
