12-12-12 Concert to Benefit Hurricane Sandy Victims

Some of the biggest names in music will play at a benefit concert on Wednesday. All proceeds will go to Hurricane Sandy victims, via the Robin Hood Foundation.

Huge names in music are lending their talents to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts at the “12-12-12” concert on Wednesday, Dec. 12. Every penny sold from ticket sales will go directly to Sandy victims through the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which provides material, money and aid to local organizations that are serving families and individuals in the regions hardest hit by the storm, including over 200 Patch towns in New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island. The all-star lineup includes Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Dave Grohl, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Chris Martin, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Eddie Vedder, Roger Waters, Kanye West, The Who and Paul McCartney, with other artists to be announced. Governor Says State Offices Will Reopen at 10 a.m. on Tuesday

Gov. Deval Patrick said Monday night that the MBTA will resume service on Tuesday and state offices will open at 10 a.m.

State offices will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Gov. Deval Patrick said in a Monday evening update on Hurricane Sandy from the bunker at the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Framingham. On his Twitter account, Patrick said that all RMV Class D drivers' tests on Tuesday had been cancelled. Patrick also said non-essential state employees should show up for work at 10 a.m. and he is leaving it up to individual school districts to determine whether they will be open on Tuesday. On Sunday night, Patrick urged all school districts to close on Monday. The worst of the storm is expected to last through 11 p.m. and there is a high tide at about midnight. Winds From Hurricane Sandy to Ramp Down Monday Night, Tuesday Morning

Strong gusts continue as wind speeds gradually diminish Monday night.

Although the Boston region will continue to experience strong gusts of wind from Hurricane Sandy Monday night, in general winds will be dying down, according to WHDH. Pete Bouchard, chief meteorologist at the TV station, in a broadcast that aired shortly before 7 p.m. Monday, said that Boston was experiencing wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour. However, he said those wind speeds would be slowly diminishing Monday night and into Tuesday morning. By 10 p.m. Boston would experience winds of around 29 miles per hour. By 1 a.m. those winds would be down to about 18 miles per hour, Bouchard reported. MBTA to Shut Down Service 2 p.m. Monday Due to Sandy

If you braved the elements and took the T to work this morning, pack up your stuff now: The MBTA will shut down service at 2 p.m. due to severe weather caused by Hurricane Sandy. According to the T website, the service suspension includes subway, bus and commuter rail service. Ferry service had already been suspended earlier in the day. The Ride remains open but users are "strongly encouraged" to call the contractor for their area to see if service is available.

Hurricane Sandy Picks Up Steam

Sustained winds are now at 90 miles per hour as the storm is tracking northwest into the east coast.

Hurricane Sandy has picked up ferocity as it hits the east coast. The National Hurricane Center reports that the sustained wind speeds are up to 90 mph. Greater Boston and northeast Massachusetts should feel the full force of Sandy this afternoon and into the evening. Effects of Sandy should stretch into Tuesday and possibly into Wednesday. 7News’ Chris Lambert is reporting the wind speeds could reach 70 mph along the coastline this afternoon with inland wind more in the 40-60 mph range with lesser wind speeds the farther you go inland. The National Hurricane Center expects hurricane force winds on the Cape and Rhode Island and tropical storm force winds north of the Cape to the Merrimack Valley in Massachusetts.
