New High-End Walgreens To Offer Gourmet Groceries - Even Fresh Sushi

Walgreens is sinking over $3 million into its existing Centre Street location, with big plans to launch one of the chain's new high-end, Whole Foods-style grocery stores there.

Walgreens will invest over $3 million into it's Centre Street location this year, with plans to re-open the site as one of the chain's new "gourmet"-style stores, offering Whole Foods-style groceries and other amenities.  The new store will include some items that would seem out of place in a traditional  Walgreens, including the sale of fresh produce, fine cheeses and even fresh sushi prepared on-site. Construction will expand the store into the soon-to-be vacant Blockbuster Video next door. The plans also include major landscaping, traffic and pedestrian light improvements for the parking lot and nearby intersection. A Trader Joe's in Malden is a great idea. But I think that only a handful of people in Malden would go there. I think if they are going to put something there it has to fit the area and the people. A Trader Joe's would be great...... but in another part of Malden. I think anything but sushi will do though.   more ›

Oyá Cuban Cafe brings authentic Cuban cuisine and culture to Exchange Street, as well as another upscale dining option to the city's growing restaurant scene.

Maybe you've walked past Oyá Cuban Cafe, a new Cuban restaurant in Malden Center that quietly held a soft opening last week – but there's a lot worth gawking at inside, too. Chef/Owner Roberto Niubo left his native Havana for the United States when he was 26, and studied the cuisine both in his homeland and at Boston's Le Cordon Bleu. After graduating from the latter, Niubo decided to bring some Cuban flair to the Boston area, finally settling on opening a business in Malden after 12 years in the business. “There aren't a lot of Cuban restaurants around here,” he said, noting the location's proximity to an MBTA station, local businesses and a growing downtown. Leaders Welcome "Amira Market" to Pleasant Street

The Middle Eastern market at 18 Pleasant St. will offer a variety of groceries and meats from the region.

The Benlaatmania family opened the doors to a new Pleasant Street Middle Eastern market this week, offering groceries and meats from the region.  "Amira Market" offers both halal and deli meats, among other Mideast culinary curiosities.  Mayor Gary Christenson and Imam Hamid Bourote of the Islamic Outreach Community and Reform Center were on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday.

The hearing is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4 at Government Center.

On Monday, February 4th, Mayor Gary Christenson and the Malden Redevelopment Authority will hold a Public Hearing in the City Council Chambers, Malden Government Center, 200 Pleasant Street, from 6:00-8:00 PM, to seek input from residents and businesses on the proposal for a professional baseball ballpark in Malden.  The purpose of the public hearing is to provide an update of “next steps” associated with this major economic development project, which will include the adoption of an urban renewal plan for the development area. The public will have the opportunity at the public hearing to ask questions about the process and to comment on the proposed $51 Million private investment project from Boston Baseball Field of Dreams, LLC.  Those …
