"Thinking Outside the Box," had everyone playing drums at the end.
The Malden High School Marching Band came in second in its division at the New England Scholastic Band Association championship in Lawrence on Sunday. Wakefield High placed first with its tribute to the rock band Aerosmith which earned a score of 95.60. Malden scored 93.30 with its medley of songs from current artists, including Dr. Dre, Kanye West, Christine Perry and P!nk. The performance, called "Thinking Outside the Box," had band members carrying boxes made out of PVC piping and ended with all members banging drum sticks ontop of the boxes. The band, under the leadership of band director Matthew Tavares, has done well at previous competitions. It came in first place last year.

The group came in second place at the New England Scholastic Band Association show.
If you see the Malden High School Golden Tornado Marching band practicing downtown this week, tip your hat – the group won second place during the New England Scholastic Band Association show in Weymouth last week. “We actually had the highest score of the night, but received a timing penalty that put us in second place,” director Matthew Tavares said. “It is one of the best starts the band has ever had, and a credit to us all.” The group will be performing at 8:20 p.m. this Saturday at the Malden/Melrose invitational – the marching band competition starts at 6 p.m.

New England Scholastic Band Association organizes event at Melrose High School
The Malden Golden Tornadoes Marching Band wowed the judges at the New England Scholastic Band Association competition in Melrose Saturday night, earning the second-highest score of all competitors just behind the Wakefield Warrior Marching Band. The Tornadoes performed a program entitled, "Essense of Desire," at the competition held at Melrose High School. The bands are not only scored on the quality of their music; they are also scored on how well they execute their routine, the precision, the musicality and also the separate color guard. A list of competitors and their scores can be found here. Click on the video below for a sample of Malden's Saturday night's performance.
