Dog Lovers Team Up for National Dog Day

National Dog Day is Aug. 26. What will you do to celebrate man's best friend?

Always wanted to adopt a dog but just never found the right time to do so? Why not visit the Animal Rescue League of Boston, Melrose Humane Society or other pet adoption agencies in search of the perfect pooch on National Dog Day. Aug. 26 is National Dog Day. That's the day animal advocate Colleen Paige has designated for honoring all those dogs who bring in the paper, and all those dogs who are neglected. Not to be confused with National Mutt Day (Dec. 2), National Puppy Day (March 23) or National Pet Day (April 11), each of the 19 national and international pet days founded by Paige are all designed with one thing in mind: to draw attention to the need for pet rescue. Paige, author, pet behaviorist and self proclaimed "pet celebrity …

Will a New Year Bring a New Home for Kirby?

This 5-year-old basset hound mix loves people.

Meet Kirby, a 5-year-old neutered male basset hound mix of 36 pounds. His owner was very sad to bring him to us as he said they were very bonded. He makes a wonderful companion animal but would prefer to be the only object of your affection, as he doesn't love other dogs. Kirby loves people and will jump up on your lap with his short little legs and give you kisses. He gets nervous around young children so would do best in an adult-only home. If you're interested in meeting him or any of the other dogs in the adoption center, please visit the Animal Rescue League of Boston Adoption Center in the South End of Boston. If you are interested in Kirby or other pets up for adoption, contact The Animal Rescue League of Boston at (617) 426-9170, …

Scruffy: An Affectionate Chihuahua Mix, Looking for a Home

Scruff is energetic but small, so he would do well in an apartment.

Meet Scruffy: 11 pounds of cute. Scruffy is a 2-year-old male Chihuahua mix who found his way to the Animal Rescue League of Boston from another rescue organization back in November. Scruffy is a little ball of energy, however due to his size he doesn’t need a large amount of exercise or space, so he would be a perfect apartment dog. He is looking for an owner who doesn’t mind if he jumps up on the couch and snuggles next to you. He loves attention and will lean into you for more petting.   He is young so he still needs to be taught good manners and would require some training once he goes to his new home. He is a little fearful of new people but warms up very quickly. He also doesn’t like to share his food, so he would do best in a quiet …

This Week's Pet: A Rat Who Loves Human Friends

Terra is a rat, and rats make good pets.

Meet Terra a 1-year-old male rat that was transferred to the Animal Rescue League from another rescue organization. Despite their reputation, rats make excellent pets! They are very social and curious animals and can be easily trained to be very tame if effort is put into handling them. Terra loves interacting with his human friends here and would love nothing more than a home where he can do the same. To meet with Terra or for more information, contact the Animal Rescue League of Boston today! To learn more about Terra and other pets up for adoption, contact The Animal Rescue League of Boston at (617) 426-9170, or stop by for a visit.

Dora Needs a New Home to Explore

Malden Patch's pet of the week.

This is Miss Dora, a 2-year-old spayed female looking for a home to call her own. She was surrendered to the shelter because her previous owners were moving and unfortunately could not take her with them. Her previous owners said that she was very playful and often requested the attention of her human companions but also enjoyed some “me time” with a nice afternoon snooze. Dora is a spirited young lady looking for a home where she can get all of her playful energy out. Although she is very playful and energetic she does have her snuggly moments where she will rub up against you and give little head butts. She would however prefer to go to a home where she is the only cat because in her mind everything should revolve around her (exactly as …
