Five things you need to know this Thursday.
Today is Wednesday, May 18. Here are five things you need to know: Same forecast again. Really: This week's weather is like the end of the vinyl version of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band: The Beatles recorded studio noise in the end groove, where it would play over and over and over. Look for fog, mist and possible showers, with highs just above 60 degrees. Council showdown: Remember yesterday, when we said the South Broadway Park project was “mostly dead?” City Councilors Gary Christenson and Craig Spadafora will move to reconsider the failed vote next Tuesday, according to Christenson. The move is the last procedural tactic left that could save the project from the scrap heap. Malden Patch will have more on the project’s stay of …

Five things to help you get through a gray day.
Today is Tuesday, May 17. Here are five things you need to know: The song remains the same: Sure, the ongoing gloomy weather resembles The Nothing from “The Neverending Story,” but try to remember it’s only clouds and a little rain. It’ll be sunny again someday, though the forecast calls for continued gray skies through the week. A town full of scribes: Thought Malden Reads was over? Think again. Grade school students in Malden were encouraged to submit their own news stories about a person who inspires them. The results are in, and Malden Patch will run the winners a little later today. Congratulations to all the kids who submitted an article, and keep writing! Superintendent search enters the final stretch: With the three superintendent…

Five things to start your day right.
Today is Thursday, May 5. Here are five things you need to know: A brief return to sweater weather: Yesterday was a washout and Cinco de Mayo looks to be a chilly affair. Expect highs in the lower 50’s and a chance at more light rain in the afternoon. Take heart, however: Things looks sunny and warm for Mother’s Day weekend. Next stop, Assembly Square? The MBTA has put the Assembly Square station project out to bid. The new station will service the planned mixed-use development at the square, according to the Federal Realty Investment Trust. If all goes to plan, construction could start as early as this fall, which could add to your travel time for the next three years. You might want to get your mind around that before the shovels start …

Five things to get you through the day.
Today is Tuesday, May 3. Here are five things you need to know: Clouds move in today: It’ll be overcast today, but temperatures should hold in the low 60’s. A way to fund a new fire station? A week after chairing a contentious Public Safety committee meeting, City Councilor Neil Kinnon has proposed the Finance Committee consider a debt exclusion to build a new fire station in the Maplewood area. Debt exclusions are a temporary version of a Proposition 2 1/2 override, where the tax levy is increased for the years needed to pay for a specific capital project. Officials have said a new station would cost between $5 million and $8 million. Kinnon sharply questioned Fire Chief Michael Murphy about his decision to close the 108-year-old …

Osama bin Laden dead: We’re breaking our Malden-only rule today for some world-stopping news: A U.S. special forces team located and killed Osama bin Laden, touching off celebrations and renewed safety concerns around the world. Monday in Malden.
Today is Monday, April 25. Here are five things you need to know: One of these days is not like the others: The National Weather Service has a remarkably consistent outlook for this week: Chance f showers and highs in the upper 60’s. The only exception is today, which will be cooler, with a high in the lower 50’s. Highway holdups: You’ve seen the start of work on I-93, but Route 1 is also going to lose lanes during the overnights. The MWRA is going to open up Route 1 to replace a water main in Saugus. The work is restricted to the evenings, from 9 p.m. to and 5 a.m.. Are you ready for some civics? Sure, there won’t be NFL Football any time soon, but there are other ways to entertain yourself on Monday nights. For example, the School …

Changes in the east side of town.
Today is Wednesday, April 20. Here are five things you need to know: A dank day: Expect fog, rain and thunderstorms today with a high near 50 degrees. Chance of rain is 70 percent. Leaving Maplewood? City Councilor Paul Condon said he, Fire Chief Michael Murphy and Mayor Richard Howard will meet to discuss the immediate future of the Laurel Street fire station. City, fire and Mystic Valley officials toured the facility yesterday and were shown the dire conditions firefighters must live in every day. The decision is the chief’s to make. If he decides to move firefighters out of the building, they’d relocate to the Overlook station in North Revere, which would increase response times to Forestdale and northern parts of Malden. Principal …

More Patch in the palm of your hand.
Today is Thursday, April 14. Here are five things you need to know: A return to sunshine: The longer today goes, the nicer it gets. Expect a little morning fog, but it’ll burn off soon enough, giving way to sunshine and temperatures in the 60’s. Crunching the numbers: Massachusetts Speaker of the House Roberto DeLeo released his fiscal 2012 budget proposal, and the numbers are similar to Governor Deval Patrick’s budget. For Malden, that means an increase in education funding and cut in local aid. School Superintendent Sidney Smith is cautiously optimistic that the numbers mean a level-service budget is possible without breaking the bank. Center hearing tonight: There’s been a lot of discussion on the site about the proposed changes to …
