Recap and analysis of the week in state government.
Like pieces of a puzzle that don't quite fit together yet, the Big Three may have been separated at birth, but with each incremental step their destinies seem to grow more intertwined. No, we're not talking about those Big Three - Gov. Deval Patrick, Senate President Therese Murray and Speaker Robert DeLeo - though they play major character roles in this thickening plot. Instead, three bills have come to define the early months of the 2013 legislative agenda and resolutions on tax hikes, local road funding and the annual state budget continue to be elusive and dependent on one another. Patrick spent the early part of his week welcoming British Prime Minister David Cameron to Boston for a few quick meetings and a visit to the Copley …

Malden Police said they made a quick arrest Monday night after witnesses helped them find a vehicle that hit an unmarked police cruiser outside their station. Lt. Det. Marc Gatcomb said officers discovered the car about 100 yards away, "resting on the sidewalk." There were no injuries in the accident. After an investigation, police arrested Anthony Panek, 52, of Malden, for allegedly operating under the influence of alcohol (fouth offense), leaving the scene of an accident and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

The new system will provide more detailed service alert information via text and email.
The MBTA is rolling out an entirely new alerts system next month which includes changes from the details provided in alert messages to a visual website enhancement. Through the new system, which goes into effect June 4, users can opt to receive email or text alerts for a late bus or train or a service interruption, much like the old system. However, the new alerts “will be clearer and more detailed with additional information regarding specific trip times, service schedule changes, and distinct directional, branch, and station communications,” according to an MBTA press statement Thursday. MBTA Deputy Press Secretary Kelly Smith clarifies this in an email to Patch: "It’s built around a core of GTFS data. GTFS, or General Transit Feed …

Here's the story of Marlene Konkoly, who found creative ways to spend less and save more so she can retire at 50. This story is the first in our series about Extreme Savers.
Americans may be living longer, but our retirement plans aren’t keeping up. Which means people are living longer with smaller bank accounts. But Marlene Konkoly will retire at age 50. How did she do it? She contributes a whopping 45 percent of the gross annual income she earns as a procurement officer for an automotive finance company to her retirement—all while owning a home and remaining debt-free. Konkoly is actually well ahead of the retirement savings curve compared to many of her fellow Americans. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, fewer than half of Americans even know how much money they would need to retire. And nearly a third of employees who had access to a defined contribution plan such as a 401(k) did not participate …
I'm hoping to drive my old beater into the ground before we need to get another car, but I'm on the lookout. What's your next car going to be?
My wife and I drive a perfectly good 2002 Nissan Sentra with 127,318 miles on it. "Stella" has four wheels and gets us from Point A to Point B. We've reached the stage in the life of the car where we don't repair body damage (as you can tell from the accompanying photo). I'm ashamed for my Dad to see it. But hey, it's paid for. Even though I'd love to get 200K miles out of Stella, she has some mechanical problems, like a seized bolt that has left the transmission fluid unchangeable for about eight years. She could conk out any old day. So we've been on the lookout for our next car. I'm paying attention to car commercials, asking friends about their cars. You know the feeling. We're looking for something that gets good gas mileage, and is…
