‘Touchdown’ with Malden High Alumni
The Malden High School Homecoming Oct. 14 promises to be a “Touchdown” for MHS Alumni.
The theme for this year’s Homecoming is the historic Thanksgiving Day football game between Malden and Medford high schools. It will be the 125th gridiron clash between the neighboring communities since 1889, a year in which there were two games.
It is said this is the second oldest continuous such rivalry in high school football in the United States. There are those who claim it is just the third.
The Homecoming itself is also is marking a milestone. This is the fifth anniversary of the all-class gathering, sponsored by the Malden High School Alumni Association.
Planning for the brunch in the school’s renovated cafeteria is well under way.
“We’re set to go,” said Patty Kelly, Class of 1980, who chairs the MHSAA Homecoming committee.
At a recent meeting the committee agreed to tie the Homecoming in with the traditional Thanksgiving Day football game, and give it the theme name: “Touchdown with Malden High Alumni.”
Since its inception, the Homecoming has drawn graduates back to the high school to reminisce about their experiences, connecting with classmates and alumni from other years.
It is hoped that the historic football game as the centerpiece of this year’s brunch will attract even more to this anniversary gathering.
According to Kelly, guests – particularly cheerleaders and majorettes -- will be encouraged to wear or bring MHS sports-related items to the brunch. Efforts will also be made to reach out to members of the MHS Sports Hall of Fame – all sports and not just football -- to urge them to join the fun.
The festivities begin at 11 a.m. and guests will have plenty of time after brunch to chat, mingle, view displays of memorabilia and explore the renovated school buildings, including the Jenkins Auditorium where they can see the hundreds of seats that now feature engraved name-plates.
The brunch, at a cost of $25 per person, again will be catered by Malden’s own Anthony’s function hall.
Malden attorney and keyboard artist Jordan Shapiro, Class of ‘60, will again entertain. Current cheerleaders are also expected to perform.
