The team announced the hire Thursday.

The Boston Bruins have hired Medford native Joe Sacco as an assistant coach, the team announced Thursday.

Sacco, 45, was an assistant coach for the Buffalo Sabres this past season. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche from 2009-2013. He had a 130-134-40 record with the Avalanche and was a Jack Adams Award finalist in 2010. He replaces Geoff Ward on the Bruins staff, who will coach in Germany.

Sacco, a Medford High graduate who went on to Boston University, played in the NHL for 13 seasons, with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Anaheim Mighty Ducks, New York Islanders, Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers. Sacco, a right winger, scored 94 goals and had 119 assists for 213 points in the league in 738 games.

Sacco’s coaching career began in the AHL two years after his retirement from playing with the Lowell Lock Monsters in 2004-2005. Sacco then coached the AHL’s Albany River Rats for one season and the Lake Erie Monsters for two seasons before joining the Avalanche.

Sacco’s younger brother, David Sacco, also played in the NHL.
