How Do Malden Teachers’ Salaries Compare to Their Peers?

A new report ranks Massachusetts districts’ average salaries.

The average teacher salary in the Malden Public Schools was $78,868 in 2013, according to a new report by Boston Business Journal.

In the report, Malden’s average salary ranks 40th of the 328 Massachusetts districts listed. Malden’s average salary was also $10,000 higher than the state median of $69,000.

Concord-Carlisle had the highest average salary at $95,947, while Florida, a small community in western Massachusetts, had the lowest at $35,497.

According to the Boston Business Journal’s Craig Douglas, “There's really not much consistency among local towns and cities when it comes to teacher salaries and employment. Some communities are spending more than ever, while others are below where they were before the last recession. Many school districts have seen average teacher pay jump in recent years, while others have made cuts.”

The highest and lowest average teacher salaries in Massachusetts:

1. Concord-Carlisle, $95,947
2. Lincoln-Sudbury, 94,087
3. Sherborn, $91,848
4. Worcester, $91,504
5. Dover-Sherborn, $89,600
40. Malden, $78,868
Median: $69,000
326. New Salem-Wendell, $50,899

Good luck trying to get an accounting of salaries paid to teachers and admin at the school. Last time anyone tried, it took a Freedom of Information request. Even then, they would not go past the top 20 initially and only went to the top 50. So many friends and family on the payroll you won't see that list again!

78 K sounds right for someone with a Masters degree entrusted with educating our kids. It takes a long time to get to that number though, don't they start out less then 40K with no promise of a job for the first the three years, the 78 k is for someone that has been teaching for over 15 years I believe
