MAYOR: 'Pay As You Throw' Announcement Today

Mayor Gary Christenson's office will hold a media round-table detailing the PAYT committee's findings.

The Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) and Waste Removal will reveal the findings of their study during a media round-table Tuesday, according to a press release circulated by city hall.

The event is not open to the general public, but is expected to provide on-the-record details to local media about possible reforms to the program.

During the campaign, Christenson promised to "work to include in the city's next recycling and waste management contract: moving to a single stream system, providing residents with larger, covered recycling containers and modifying trash pickup so that no PAYT bag is required until after the first 33-gallon barrel is filled," according to campaign literature, though the committee reportedly explored a number of options while drafting their report.

Malden Patch will have more information as it becomes available.

I totally understand the issues with limited income and with the years and years that this has been going on. These things take time -- if they just took away the bag program without something in its place, the city would need to make up the revenue elsewhere. I dislike PAYT as much as you do, trust me, but I also realize that just yanking it out of policy without some reasonable compromise or plan to replace that revenue - or even worse, a half-baked plan - would make things exponentially worse.

I like Everett's trash collection program. Supply us with two big bins, one for recyclables and one for trash. End of story.

As judge Smailes said..... Weeeellll....... We're waiting.......

How about only pick up residential trash only once every other week. With the right size barrels that should be enough, unless of course it's an illegal boarding house , or a house with an illegal amount of inhabitants .... and we don't have any those in Malden now do we

Any word on the PAYT's committee proposal?

PAYT is a decent idea, but its implementation leaves a whole lot to be desired. A couple months ago, I found myself once again loading a blue bag with other bags loaded with garbage. OK, that act in itself is not that big a deal to me but I have what I think are two reasonable gripes: why do I need to expend more effort than otherwise when I'm already paying for something, and why am I forced to use these substandard bags? Having to pay for them makes you want to hold onto your garbage until you can overload them, and they're rated for volume, not weight/durability. So one day, I loaded up my regular 55gal trash can with my (bagged) trash and placed two PAYT bags on top under the cover. To my surprise, JRM took it! They acted rationally that one time....and never since. And don't get me started about the piss poor attention to proper handling and courtesy of JRM when dealing with our recyclables. Much of the time, they leave up to 10% of it still in the bin, or in the street, where the (extremely loud ass) street sweeper pushes much of it aside, instead of picking it up. Add to that the utter disrespect that MHS students have for litter laws, and you live in Businessweek's 2009 "Best Place to Raise Your Kids" in Mass!

I am still interested in the comment about being able to drop my own trash off legally somewhere in Malden and the city accepting it without prejudice to the color of the bags.

Don't lose heart Mike. I totally agree with you. Some don't understand that it takes actual time to change a program for the better and Mayor Gary already made changes to the stupid program. At least I have a little more control over how much I spend when I buy the bags. Now hopefully the program will be completely revamped. We'll soon see.

You know Annie....if you got the Excel program, you too could do pie charts, and give Kinnon a real run for his money. :)
mg April 02, 2013 at 06:20 PM
I like pie!
mg April 02, 2013 at 06:24 PM
I get the frustration, really. I hate buying these stupid bags too, and I REALLY hate that we don't have recycle bins with covers... so much so, I recently went and spent $10 for a taller trash barrel with a cover and got a free sticker from the DPW for plastic recyclables... that gets me by for 2 or so weeks, and stuff doesn't blow away during a storm. I'm not suggesting that everyone have to do that, but it's not an intractable problem.

Look at Mike G with his fancy capital letters on his Mac Book Pro......oooooo, I'm jealous! Signed, someone who didn't over pay for his Toshiba laptop! :)
mg April 02, 2013 at 06:28 PM
You are jealous, it's okay buddy :) Signed, Someone who didn't pay at all for his company-issued Macbook Pro :) :) :)
mg April 02, 2013 at 06:31 PM
Did I mention it has a retina display? And SSD?
Chris Caesar April 02, 2013 at 06:48 PM
Sorry Mike, Paul is right. :)
Margery Bagley Welch April 02, 2013 at 06:59 PM
You're an out of the box thinker Mike! I like that! It's not an intractable problem - it's not even a world changing problem. But it would be nice to see the end of those dumb bags. Hopefully Gary will have good news for us. Keep your fingers crossed!
paul surette April 02, 2013 at 07:13 PM
Perhaps, Mike....but the day your employers ends his realtionship with you...well, your relationship with Mac the Laptop will end as well :) I get to keep mine. Yay for me!

Darlene April 02, 2013 at 07:35 PM
Stay on track. Is there such a place in Malden to legally bring your trash weekly without prejudice to the color of your bags and the city will accept it.
mg April 02, 2013 at 07:42 PM
Meh, I have other laptops. It's all good :)
mg April 02, 2013 at 07:43 PM
He's right that you're jealous? QUIT E-THUGGING ME
mg April 02, 2013 at 07:44 PM
Wait Paul is that what this is about? You want to break me and the Macbook up? We can share, really.
mg April 02, 2013 at 07:44 PM
Darlene April 02, 2013 at 07:49 PM
Well that should be an option for those who choose to participate.

It's easy to grin when your ship comes in and you've got the stock market beat But the man worthwhile is the man who can smile When his shorts are too tight in the seat
mg April 02, 2013 at 08:23 PM
If it came down to that, I'd just stockpile my trash and then hire a local company to haul it away for less than $100... unfortunately that stinks, and attracts critters.
paul surette April 02, 2013 at 08:44 PM
I know at least Chris is smart enough not to pay $1200. for a glowing apple!
Chris Caesar April 02, 2013 at 09:43 PM
Yeah, and that guy is an idiot.
jirkyrick April 02, 2013 at 10:04 PM
Sooooo.. We are still waiting, bad survey monkey, bad naughty monkey, he needs a spanking.... But really, what's the announcement from Mayor Quimby
mg April 02, 2013 at 10:21 PM
Any laptop worth its salt is going to cost way more than $1200 for what I need it to do, honestly.
