Highlights from Patch’s Chat with Mayor Christenson

Christenson touched on several hot-button topics in his monthly chat with Malden Patch readers.

Mayor Gary Christenson answered questions from Malden Patch readers . The chat covered a wide range of hot-button topics. Here are some of the highlights from that discussion.

On the stabbing outside of a “Project X” party:

“I spoke with a family member yesterday who said that the victim was coming home and is expected to make a full recovery. I let the family know that I was here for them if they need any additional help. We are continuing to work on the second part of your question. We have been in touch with the Temple and will research what went wrong and act accordingly.”

On hiring local residents as new police officers:

“I see my role as getting the resources, I am now leaving it up to the experts on the next steps in terms of making the actual hires. My thinking is that I have been told that we are in dire need of help now so if there are candidates that are ready and willing, then I would support his decision to hire from outside the city. My preference would be from Malden, but again, I've been told we need help immediately.”

On parking in Malden Center:

“The parking meters will cover an area from Florence Street to Route 60. They will be smart meters that will allow either 'pay and display' or 'pay by space' options. Hopefully this will help turn over spaces and benefit shoppers and retailers alike.”

On Malden Center reconstruction and major projects:

“The Pleasant Street Restoration project will be going to bid in April and hopefully in the ground by June. The other projects, such as Super Fitness site and the former Granada Lanes, could potentially be breaking ground within 6-12 months.”

On a proposed independent league baseball stadium:

“Negotiations are ongoing and we are hoping to have an update from the developers by the end of April.”

On changing the city's trash collection system:

We are working hard and I am in receipt of a report that contains seven options that I am currently reviewing. If you have any further ideas or solutions, please e-mail me at mayor@cityofmalden.org.
