Ed Markey Takes Oath of Office Tuesday Morning

One of Malden's own will take his oath of office to become the commonwealth's newest U.S. Senator Tuesday morning.

Senator-elect Edward Markey will be sworn in by Vice Pres. Joe Biden during the 10 a.m. Capitol Hill ceremony, where Markey will replace outgoing interim Sen. William Cowan.

Markey also resigned from the congressional seat he's held for 35 years Monday, leaving behind yet another primary (Oct. 15) and general (Dec. 10) election for voters in the state's seventh district.

On top of that, the new senator will also face re-election to a full six-year term during the state's regularly scheduled 2014 Senate race.

The change will also mean new assignments for the former chairman of the House Energy Independence and Global Warming Committee.

Markey's office isn't speaking publicly about where he may end up, though as a congressman he served as a member on a number of committees related to environmental protection and natural resources.

California Senator Barbara Boxer said she would be "thrilled" to have Markey serve on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, which she has chaired since 2007.

“Of course I would be thrilled because Ed is such a very strong proponent of clean air and safe drinking water, and he is such a strong voice when it comes to the oil companies polluting, and he has the ocean right there and he gets why it is so important to protect it,” Boxer told The Hill.

“But it is a lot of other considerations when you start putting people on committees. It is very complicated.”
