American Legion Hosts Flag Retiring Ceremony in Malden

The American Legion Malden Post #69 hosted their annual Flag Retirement Ceremony in late August, according to a city press statement.

Commander Mark Granese participated in the Aug. 24 ceremony and was joined by Malden Girl Scout Troop #71139 and Heidi Sutherland, Mayor Gary Christenson, Legion officials Connie Murphy and Larry Clark, Kevin Jarvis Director of Veterans’ Services and a large group of Malden residents, according to the statement. This traditional event promotes the proper respect for our U.S. flags by honorably disposing of old, worn and unserviceable flags, the statement adds.

Retired U.S. Army Sergeant Major Mark Fisette who oversaw the ceremony made sure that the 10,000 flags that he and volunteers, including Boy Scout Troop #603, had collected from Malden cemeteries were respectfully retired, reads the statement.

As in past years, Malden Girls Scout Troop 71139 closed the ceremony by leading those gathered in the Pledge of Allegiance, the statement adds.
