Malden Teen Killed in Two-Vehicle Collision in New Hampshire

Icy roads are suspected in a two-vehicle crash in New Hampshire that killed a Malden High School student and left her mother and sister injured Saturday morning, Jan. 11.
Julia Vanella, 16, was in the front passengers seat when the Toyota 4Runner her mother, Lisa Vanella, was driving drifted across the center lane of Route 16 and collided with a Jeep Liberty at approximately 10 a.m. in Wakefield which is located on the Maine border, reported wmur.com.
Lisa Vanella and her 13-year-old daughter, who was riding in the back of the vehicle, were injured and are being treated at an area hospital.
Julia Vanella was a popular junior at Malden High School, a fan of the Boston Bruins and an accomplished dancer since childhood.
The driver of the Jeep Liberty sustained serious injuries and remains hospitalized as does his two passengers, including a 13-year-old girl.
Wakefield Police Chief Ken Fifield said police were looking into the drivers' actions, but icy road conditions were a factor in the mid-morning crash."Conditions were very slick and very treacherous," he told the New Hampshire Union Leader.

While temperatures in southern New Hampshire reached the low 50s, the area of the accident remained near freezing all day.
