A Malden man was arraigned on charges related and left a 17-year-old with serious injuries, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone informed the public today.

Tyrell Berberena, Jr., 17 of Malden, was arraigned in Malden District Court on charges of armed assault with intent to murder, aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and carrying a loaded firearm without a license.  Malden District Court Judge Dominic Paratore ordered the defendant held, pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Friday, September 14.

“This is another tragic example of young people resorting to violence to settle a dispute,” DA Leone said.  “We will continue to work with the Malden Police Department, Mayor, and the city’s leadership to address these recent instances of violence, and work to address violence among our young people.”

According to authorities, at 10:31 am on Monday, September 10, Malden Police responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of Warren and Eastern Avenue in Malden.  Upon arrival, authorities located the victim, a 17 year old male, evidencing an obvious gunshot wound.  The victim was transported to the hospital where he is in critical, but stable condition.

Malden Police and State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office commenced an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.  Authorities do not believe this to have been a random attack.  The circumstances remain under investigation.

These charges are allegations and the defendant is considered innocent until proven guilty.

The prosecutor assigned to the case is Steve Loughlin.  The Victim Witness Advocate is Rani Scott.
