A Malden man was badly injured after being struck by a vehicle on Salem Street Tuesday night, according to police

At 6:54 p.m. Nov. 26, rescue crews responded to the Salem and Holden Streets area near Malden High School for a report of a motor vehicle crash with a pedestrian, according to Det. Lt. Marc Gatcomb. Deputy Fire Chief Leonard Dunn III added that the incident occurred in front of 90 Salem St.

A man was crossing Salem Street when he was struck by a vehicle, according to police.

"Upon arrival (officers) observed a Cadillac in the eastbound lane of Salem Street (that) was unoccupied," Gatcomb said. "Fire personnel were attending to an injured male. The pedestrian was unconscious at the time."

"...The person suffered serious injuries and Cataldo (Ambulance Service, Inc.) had a paramedic vehicle along with a medic supervisor on scene," Dunn said, adding that Engine 1 also responded to the scene. Rescue crews were on scene for about 15 minutes before it was cleared, according to Dunn.

The victim, a 32-year-old Malden man, suffered "serious injuries" and was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, according to Gatcomb.

The operator of the vehicle was interviewed at the scene but has not been arrested or charged with a crime, according to Gatcomb. He added that it does not appear that alcohol was a factor in the crash, but police are continuing to investigate the incident and will know at a later date what, if any, role speeding or other variables may have played in the accident.

Traffic in the area was diverted while a State Police accident reconstruction team assisted Malden Police at the scene, according to Gatcomb.

"Generally we request the State Police Reconstruction Team to assist us with the investigation when it appears that there are some major injuries," he said. "...In this particular instance, it appeared the victim was suffering from some serious injuries so as a precaution they requested the State Police to come out."

Detectives also responded to take photographs and collect evidence which was taken from the scene and logged, he added.

The incident remains under investigation.
