Malden Arson Suspect Arrested

The 28-year-old Malden man allegedly set a fire at his own Converse Avenue residence on Friday.

Police have arrested a 28-year-old Malden man who allegedly set a fire at his own Converse Avenue residence early Friday morning.

Namit Thapa was taken into custody Saturday and charged with arson and disorderly conduct, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

The three-alarm fire injured two firefighters and displaced seven people. The firefighters, one from Malden, the other from Saugus, were treated at local hospitals and released.

Crews responded to the fire at 63 Converse Ave., a multi-family home, at about 5:30 a.m. Friday. Firefighters went inside the home to look for Thapa, as he was unaccounted for, but he had already fled the scene, authorities said.

Police investigated the fire after receiving a tip.

Thapa is expected to be arraigned in Malden District Court on Monday.
