Deputy Chief: Webster Street Fire Caused by Candle

No one was hurt in the Friday evening blaze.

Firefighters have determined that an unattended candle was the cause of a fire at a four-story Webster Street apartment building around 6 p.m. Friday night.

Malden Fire Deputy Chief Leonard Dunn said occupants forgot to extinguish the candle as they left the apartment.

Luckily, no injuries were reported and firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in about 20 minutes.

Most occupants were allowed to return to their homes, except for two badly damaged apartments near the source of the fire.

"This is another reminder to use candles responsibly, and check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors," Dunn said. "...Early notification can save lives and property."

The month has been a busy one for firefighters, who have responded to seven separate fires in only three weeks.
