Officials ID Man Shot and Killed on Main St. as Skate Shop Owner

Shawn Clark, 39, of Saugus and owner of Patriot Skateboards in Malden, has been ID'd as the victim in today's shooting by the Middlesex District Attorney's office.

UPDATE 6:40pm: Mayor Gary Christenson has issued a statement about the shooting:

“My heartfelt sympathies are with the family of the victim.

State and local police along with the Middlesex District Attorney’s office are working diligently to investigate the circumstances. We are going to continue to provide our Police Department with the resources they need to address criminal activity.

With the addition of nine new officers, continued investments in surveillance camera technology, and our transition to a new Police Chief, we will intensify our efforts in crime prevention.”

UPDATE 5:30pm: Shawn Clark, 39, of Saugus and owner of Patriot Skateboards in Malden, has been identified as the victim in today's shooting by the Middlesex District Attorney's office.

Original story: A man has reportedly died after sustaining multiple gun shot wounds during an apparent robbery near 800 Main St. just after 12:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

A witness, who asked not to be named, reported hearing "multiple shots fired," and saw a victim with several gunshot wounds in his stomach lying on the southbound lane of Main St.

"It looked like he had at least four gun shots to the abdomen," he said. "He was not talking, eyes were closed, not sure if actually unconscious, but breathing was extremely shallow as he was loaded onto the ambulence."

"Malden Police responding to shots fired near the 800 block of Main St.," The City of Malden's Twitter feed read. "Please stay clear of the area. More info as we get it."

Twitter photos show clothes strewn around the crime scene.

While no official information was available from police, a bulletin from the Breaking News Network service indicated the victim suffered "multiple gunshot wounds" and was in traumatic arrest en route to Melrose-Wakefield Memorial Hospital.

Police continue to investigate the scene. No official information was yet available.

Uh oh
jirkyrick January 31, 2013 at 12:26 AM
Oh yeh, thank you mayor Howard, this your legacy, you could not take the chief to Winchester with you
Matthew January 31, 2013 at 12:32 AM
@Rick; UH OH what?????? And lets forget about what the past idiot did and focus on what we can do now.
david mokal January 31, 2013 at 12:39 AM
Thank you for the info Ill be in Saugus Tommoro too. Great Idea Thanks Greg
jirkyrick January 31, 2013 at 12:47 AM
The past is part of the problem, we have the chief who is a legacy from the last idiot and until we get make a serious change at the top of the police force, then this will just keep happening, he has no clue how to use modern technology to help solve the problem , just more feet on the ground alone is not the answer. It's research , why is the crime increasing, what can we do as a city government and planning that makes Malden less attractive and a target for criminals, The uh oh, that would be the chiefs response to the patrolman quote of he would not want them at the safety meeting, it would expose that the emperor (chief wiggums) has no clothes (ideas or knowledge to do the job in this century)

Just was looking in Boston.com there is a picture of him and his dog. Great looking man. They give his Bio about him serving in the Military. Just in passing I hear so much good he has done by people who knew him in Saugus at Cliftondale Square where he had his store. His store bordered my freinds house and the Kids loved him in Saugus.

I drove by the skate shop today because I am still so shocked that this wave of crime is almost at my front door! The television stations were there with kids on their skateboards. It makes me sick to my stomach that this is happening, I have lived here for twenty plus years and the crime is at an all time high! I am more mad than I am afraid at the brazenness to kill a man in the middle of the day with no regard to the people around, it's a miracle that no one else wasn't hurt!

Lord, please comfort his mom Anita, wife Mellisa and two boys. Thank you for Shawn's time here on earth, for the man he became, and those he served and cared for. May we honor his life by being of service to others and caring for the widows and orphans.

Everett actually has a slighter higher violent crime rate than Malden does.
Chris Caesar January 31, 2013 at 03:03 AM
Greg it's in fact true. The trick is that population was steadily going downwards until the 1980s and then started going back up. I think in the 50s-60s it was 57k or so and now its 60k.
Jay Axson January 31, 2013 at 04:59 AM
Anita, My deepest condolences to you and your family. I pray for you and Shawn's wife and young children. I never got to know Shawn as man as he was just a little boy when I knew you (I was a close friend of Brian) You must be proud of the man Shawn grew into. May God give you and your family the strength and love to persevere. Deepest Love and Sympathy, Jay Axson

i am sick to my stomach over this one, this guy serves our country and comes home and has the drive to open his own business and take care of his family and it all gets snuffed out by a couple of scumbags.i hope all you anti-gun freaks are happy today.this just proves how wrong these politicians are about our safety, they want to ban guns for everyone but do you think people like these scumbags are gonna obey the gun laws, the law abiding folks have to be able to protect themselves from this scourge of rat bas*ards that want to take and steal from us and kill us. too bad this brave marine did not have a weapon at his ready to defend himself and he would of taken these two pieces of trash out.people have to defend themselves, the police cannot do it,they are not capable of being their fast enough to save you, only you can save you and yours.

This is why we need the death penalty. I just cant imagine what a skateshop on a Tuesday at noon time could have for valuables or cash that would make someone risk it all, with a gun and target that store. Theres a bank 2 liquor stores and convenient store a hundred yards from that shop? It is a valid question, but doesnt negate the tragedy.
paul surette January 31, 2013 at 11:29 PM
I hate to spoil your kumbaya moment here, folks....BUT....I lived on Clifton St. a few years back. I used to walk by that store often. I even had a run-in with a few of the 'upstanding' citizens who frequent there. My money says Mr. Clark knew his assailant. I used to see a lot of his 'customers' starting fight with one another where I lived. And they had skateboards (GASP....I know, right?) Everytime the police came to talk to some of these punks, someone always ended up getting arrested on outstanding warrants. A few have been known to be dealing drugs at the park behind the public pool. With all due-respect to Annie-Malden's piece, and I'm not painting with a broad stroke here, I just am NOT fond of skateboarders, especially after one punk bowled my mother over on Exchange St, and laughed after he did it. I did manage to find him though....and THAT"s all I'm going to say about him. :)

His name was Shawn Let me say this, I am a small business who was robbed at gunpoint at noon on a Tues, WHY, because small business are east targets, crimes of opportunity, that's why. They got about $50 from my business! Enough spending money for the scumbags that day, that is why small businesses are targets, that is why. They are very easy targets. Let's hope that your own family does not go through this! It does not matter what you think or what YOUR MONEY SAYS! Shawn, that was his name, was brutally MURDERED! That’s the only thing that matters, nothing can justify that, NOTHING! What's wrong with you? REALLY! This was 39 year old father of 2 young boys, husband, son, grandson, cousin, nephew, his name was Shawn. That's where you should put your money. There is no reason for Shawn or ANYONE or for ANY REASON, to be brutally murdered, NONE. Shawn was a Marine who fought for YOU and his country! Keep that picture of Shawn in your head when you sleep tonight and keep you money in your own pocket! Opinions are like as*ho@#s, everyone has one! Spoil your kumbaya moment here, are you FU2*ing kidding?????? Really???? Stick that smiley the end of your lovely post where it belongs. Just so ignorant! If one more per asks WHY, please read this! And Paul Surette, maybe that money that says, would help his young boys!
MJC February 01, 2013 at 07:36 PM
Shawn was my nephew!
Matthew February 01, 2013 at 08:01 PM
Mr Surette. Just how many years back do you consider "a few years back" was this that you lived on Clifton St. when you had this encounter? Just curious.

paul, your comment just highlights your ignorance and bias. Be more open-minded and not so judgemental.

I bet you this store owner had a good clean adult record, and was a property owning taxpayer for many years without any history of violence...taxation without representation
