YOUR TURN: Malden Names Its Next Police Chief

It's official: Lt. Kevin Molis is the city's new top cop. What should be his first priority as he takes the helm?

Mayor Gary Christenson and Police Commissioner Salvatore Gennetti named Lt. Kevin Molis as the city's next police chief Wednesday.

Molis is a highly visible member of the department, often acting as the institution's official face at Christenson's monthly public safety meetings.

Some readers may remember his stint as the school resource officer at Malden High School. Molis was one of the state's first community police officers assigned to a full-time patrol at a suburban high school, and was the subject of an Associated Press feature in 1995

Earlier this week, the selection panel consisting of School Superintendent David DeRuosi, Human Resources Director Eleanor Cushing, City Council President Neal Anderson, City Councillor Barbara Murphy and four community members submitted their recommendations to the Mayor and Commissioner.

Lt. Molis stood out to the panel because of his years of experience and his strong “hands on” community presence, a press release from the mayor's office read.

Molis was not immediately available for comment.

Chris you should interview some of the police officers for their opinion and thoughts.Just curious what are the standards for being the chief?

Seems like a nice guy. Reminded me of cross between Dick Van Dyke and Andy Griffith during his talk at the Mayor's crime meeting. But a little more towards Dick Van Dyke. He'll do well.

Leadership at the Point of the Bayonet Ten Principles for Success 1. Strive to be a leader of character, competence, and courage. 2. Lead from the front. Say, “Follow me!” and then lead the way. 3. Stay in top physical shape--physical stamina is the root of mental toughness. 4. Develop your team. If you know your people, are fair in setting realistic goals and expectations, and lead by example, you will develop teamwork. 5. Delegate responsibility to your subordinates and let them do their job. You can’t do a good job if you don’t have a chance to use your imagination and creativity. 6. Anticipate problems and prepare to overcome obstacles. Don’t wait until you get to the top of the ridge and then make up your mind. 7. Remain humble. Don’t worry about who receives the credit. Never let power or authority go to your head. 8. Take a moment of self-reflection. Look at yourself in the mirror every night and ask yourself if you did your best. 9. True satisfaction comes from getting the job done. They key to a successful leader is to earn respect--not because of rank or position, but because you are a leader of character. 10. Hang Tough!--Never, ever, give up. Chief Molis has all of these great qualities... Made Famous by the great Major Dick Winters 101st Those that are negative are part of the problem.

Not that this is a comment on Molis (I think he's a smart guy) but I doubt you'd get a super honest assessment from his subordinates on the record.

pictured above, Chief Molis confronts the Junior Hells Angels Bicylce Gang I am willing to give him a chance, although I was hoping for someone outside with real big city crime solving experience, I am not sure if a chief with no higher ed really has the training needed to come up with innovative solutions to Maldens crime problem, yes Mayor Quimby, there is a crime problem in Malden. Good luck and hope we see results in the next 12 months, now book em boys...

As a retired ex-partner of Chief Molis,I can truly say that over the past 20 yrs.or so Kevin did more for community policing of the public than any officer I ever worked with. Given the present era of media mayhem, he is truly qualified to deal with the task before him.
jirkyrick March 28, 2013 at 05:33 PM

Really Ken
Justin March 29, 2013 at 02:55 PM
I hope he does well and supports those who work for him. Some of those before him are not the ones who should be giving him any advice for they are a great deal of the problem with the department today.
Justin March 29, 2013 at 06:26 PM
Where's this happening Rick?
Jimbo April 01, 2013 at 02:34 AM
