Alleged Teen Shooter Arraigned in Malden Court

Tyrell Berberena, Jr., 17 faces charges of armed assault with intent to murder, aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and carrying a loaded firearm without a license. He was held pending a dangerous hearing.

The 17-year-old arrested in connection with Monday's shooting of another 17-year-old near Warren Street was arraigned in Malden District Court on Tuesday morning, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office

Tyrell Berberena, Jr., 17 of Malden, was arraigned on charges of armed assault with intent to murder, aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and carrying a loaded firearm without a license, according to a press release from the DA's Office.

Malden District Court Judge Dominic Paratore ordered Berberena held pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for this Friday.

The 17-year-old victim sustained "serious injuries" in the shooting according to the DA's Office. Malden Patch previously reported he was taken to Mass. General Hospital.

Berberena allegedly when the shooting happened, the DA's Office said.

"This is another tragic example of young people resorting to violence to settle a dispute," Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone said in the press release. "We will continue to work with the Malden Police Department, Mayor, and the city’s leadership to address these recent instances of violence, and work to address violence among our young people."

At 10:31 a.m. on Monday, Malden Police responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of Warren Street and Eastern Avenue, the DA's Office previously said, and police found the victim with an "obvious gunshot wound."

"Authorities do not believe this to have been a random attack," the DA's Office said in Tuesday's press release. "The circumstances remain under investigation."

Dangerousness hearing? HE SHOT SOMEBODY and then nonchalantly walked away from the scene of the crime! Lock 'em up!
DannyBoy September 11, 2012 at 08:27 PM
The shooter is an alleged gang member, belonging to the Tiny Rascals Gang, according to this Boston.com Malden article (see link: http://www.boston.com/yourtown/news/malden/2012/09/malden_teen_held_without_bail.html). This bit of information was left out from Patch reports. Anyone who does not believe that Malden does not have gangs is in denial.

I meant to say "Anyone who does not believe that Malden has gangs is in denial."

What kind of gun was used? Everyone is saying it was a big gun.

From the boston.com article: In an interview Monday, Malden Mayor Gary Christenson, asked if the city was host to gangs, demurred. "That's not a question I can answer, that's more -- the police would know best whether we have gangs, and when I ask that question, [the police] don't believe we do," the mayor said. "There are impact players that the police have identified and are watching." SERIOUSLY? REALLY? Ask any police officer on the streets in Malden if there are gangs here and find out who's full of it. Time to get a grip and stop acting like Malden is this quaint bedroom community that is being suddenly upended by random acts of violence.

High Capacity that means large magazine that can hold about 15 bullets and one in the chamber. I'd like to know where did the gun come from have they traced it yet?

10+1 is legal in MA unless it is pre-ban.

I just asked my Grandson if he heard anything about the Victim. He said he was shot in the heart and is in Critical but stable condition. This is 3d hand information so take it for what it's worth.
Suzanne September 13, 2012 at 07:02 PM
It was on Boston.com that he was shot in the chest, bullet is lodge in the aorta and they cannot take it out as it may cause more damage if they do, this was according to the article I read.

We hardly ever require pre-approval in the comments section (though the site has glitched into that setting in the past). I have removed the comment for all kinds of reasons.

Wow... Nice job! You ever sleep?!
