OBITUARY: Brendan L. Duffy, 74

Army Veteran served in the 82nd airborne Division.

Brendan L. Duffy passed away on September 5, 2012. He was 74 years old.

Brendan grew up in South Boston and graduated from English High School. He was a longtime resident of Malden and lived in Tewksbury for the past 8 years. Brendan was married to Elaine (Sabadini) Duffy, his loving wife for 52 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Cold War and served in Germany in the 82nd Airborne Division.

Brendan worked at Malden High School for 35 years, initially as a teacher of English and eventually as a Class Master/ Assistant Principal. He was first exposed to the luster of the MHS faculty when in the early ‘60’s, and while still in college, he attended meetings of the Good Reading and Discussion Group at the Malden Public Library chaired by Dr. John Bowman, Head of the MHS English Department.

Brendan also served as Advisor to “The Lion”, MHS’ creative writing magazine and The Maldonian, the school yearbook. He retired from MHS in 1998 and spent five years on the staff of Mayor Richard Howard of Malden. Brendan also became and adjunct teacher of Writing at Bunker Hill Community College.

In addition to his wife, Brendan leaves his beloved children, Marko Duffy and his wife Carla (Gasparello) of Tewksbury and Kevin Duffy and his wife Sharon of Malden. He was the dear brother of Denise Hirschmann and her husband Peter of Leeds, England and the late Dorothy Dutton, and Richard and Robert Duffy. Brendan was the cherished grandfather of Geena, Marina, Sophia and Kieran Duffy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Hearts Church, 297 Main Street, Malden on Saturday, September 8th at 10:00 a.m. Visiting hours will be held from the A. J. Spadafora Funeral Home, 865 Main Street, Malden on Friday, September 7th from 3-8 p.m. Interment will be private.
