Sheriff Koutoujian, Mayor Christenson visit Community Work Program site

Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian was in Malden Monday, where he was joined by Mayor Gary Christenson to inspect work getting underway by a Community Work Program (CWP) crew from the Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff and Mayor were on upper Broadway where the CWP inmate crew was assisting the Malden DPW clearing brush and debris along sidewalks.

“CWP is a prime example of how strong community partnerships can help address unique public safety situations with unique public safety solutions,” said Sheriff Koutoujian.  “Our inmates learn the value of a hard day of work and help carry the financial burden that is hindering so many municipalities.”

“This program not only allows inmates to work and contribute to the community, but it also provides us with a resource to clean-up areas of the city,” said Mayor Christenson.

All of the inmates who participate in the CWP program are minimum security inmates nearing the end of the sentences and go through a rigorous selection process.  All of the inmates who take part in the program have been convicted of non-violent offenses and the crews are under the constant supervision of trained deputies.

The current CWP work will save the city an estimated $3,000.
