M.E.B. Hockey Weekly Round Up Week 3 (Parity)

The M.E.B. hockey squads continue parity play this week. Much like that old nursery story, some teams are too hot, some teams are too cold, and some teams are just right.

MITE (7-8 Years Old)

After last week’s ADM mandatory cross-ice game, which was more like a mob than a skate, the Mites have been split into two teams with half the squad remaining at Kasabuski in Saugus (Mite K) while the other half moved to Stoneham (Mite S).

Kasabuski Rink, Saugus MA

The Mite K’s faced off against a tough Saugus-Lynnfield team. M.E.B. was down early but scored 4 goals in two minutes to get back in it. Chris Cecca and Chris Hanifan both had hat tricks. Will Fosdick and Cristian Monge added the other two goals. Jake Simpson shut Saugus-Lynnfield down in net as the 3rd period ran out to preserve the tie.

Mite S

Malden/East Boston 3, Stoneham Pink 6

Stoneham Arena, Stoneham MA

In a before Sunday church match-up the Mite S squad squared off against their future prom dates, who hopefully won’t wear heels, the Stoneham Pink crew. M.E.B. got down early but battled back and took control in the second half with goals by both Anthony DeFilippo and Anthony Messina and strong net minding by Cristian Monge.

SQUIRT (9-10 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 5, Waltham 0

Burlington Ice Palace, Burlington MA

In a neutral site game the red hot Squirts took on Waltham. In the 1st period Brendan Curtis scored assisted by Cal Baglio and Sean Horkan. The 2nd period saw Curtis again all alone to make the score 2-0. Andrew Hallahan found the back of the net to end the period. The 3rd period had Nick Summers getting on the score sheet assisted by Curtis and Horkan. Curtis wasn’t finished yet as he scored with time running out for the hat trick.

PEEWEE (11-12 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 0, Waltham 9

Veterans Memorial Rink, Waltham, MA

The M.E.B. Peewee’s traveled to hostile territory to take on Waltham. With a bench not much larger than a bowling team Malden/East Boston put up a strong fight, skating with them all the way. M.E.B.’s shots on net couldn’t find their way past the Waltham goalie but they won the physiological battle as Waltham became frustrated that M.E.B. wouldn’t give up and forced them to go on the defensive more often than they expected.

BANTAM AAA (13-14 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 9, Marblehead 0

Connery Rink, Lynn MA

In Bantam AAA action, the M.E.B. boys took to the ice against Marblehead. M.E.B. went on the man advantage and Ryan Noonan’s wrist shot from the point deflected off Zach Rich's stick. A little less than 10 seconds later, Louis Stafferi sent a nice wrist shot past the opposing net minder and the Mustangs were off to the races. 49 seconds left in the period, Jonah Carlson started his show with a nice blast from a dish from Anthony Cecca. 30 seconds later it was Carlson again with a wrap around. The 2nd period saw more of the same with a nice goal from James Pandolfo, followed by Carlson’s third for the hat trick on a beautiful pass from behind the net from Cecca. The 2nd period ended with a Cecca blast from the slot to go up 7-0. The exclamation point was placed when Noonan scored short-handed just seconds into the third and Mike DeFilippo cleaned up the loose puck in front after a nice Carlson rush and sealed it 9-0. Marblehead picked up the game physically into the 3rd, but M.E.B. responded with thunderous hits from defensemen Jarred Downey, Paul Curtis and Rich. Goaltending came up strong with Anthony Giuliano getting the shutout.

BANTAM AA (13-14 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 1, Waltham 4

Loring Arena, Framingham MA

The Bantam AA's lost to Framingham by a score of 4-1 on Saturday, September 21st.  Ryan Tosto scored the lone goal unassisted.

MIDGET (15-18 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 0, Winthrop 1

Valley Forum, Malden MA

Malden/East Boston 3, Newburyport 3

Valley Forum, Haverhill MA

The Midgets took on Newburyport on Friday night, their second game in three days. Dan Valente drew first, scoring the first goal to take a 1-0 lead. Newburyport came back with three unanswered goals. The big men never gave up and persistence paid off as Mike Goroshko got M.E.B.'s second goal in the 3rd and Valente tied it up towards the end if the period to skate away with a tie.
