The M.E.B. hockey squads continue parity play as teams find their levels and competition in some cases is wildly mismatched. The Valley League will make adjustments in mid-October and place each time in a competitive bracket. Until then…

Kasabuski Rink, Saugus MA
The Mites had a great start to their season on Sunday with a 6-2 win over a tough Masco team. Chris Hanifan led M.E.B. off with a strong start in net and multiple players scored on opening day! Mites are playing in the new 4 on 4, half-ice format required by USA Hockey’s Athletic Development Model (ADM). The ADM, through utilization of LTAD principles, allows hockey teams to integrate training, competition and recovery programming with relation to biological development in order to make an athlete out of a kid and make a hockey player out of an athlete.

SQUIRT (9-10 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 5, Wakefield 4

PEEWEE (11-12 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 1, Natick 8
Connery Rink, Somerville MA
The M.E.B. Peewee’s took on Natick. In the 1st period Natick came out physical but Malden/East Boston fought back and found themselves killing a penalty just 3 minutes into the game. An errant puck found the corner and Natick was up 1-0. A laser from the point found the five-hole for Natick’s second goal. Goalie Tristan Goroshko found his groove and made save after save. M.E.B. was strong until mid-way through the 2nd period where the M.E.B. 9 man rotation began to lose a step. Natick capitalized, continued to play the body as well as the puck with fresh legs. Goroshko let up 1 more in the 2nd on a breakaway and left the game down 0-3. The Peewee’s continued to play hard as John Bernbaum and Corey Rufo couldn’t find the back of the net, but not for lack of trying. The tandem of Ryan Gray and Shamus Royds found their physic repore in the 3rd, blind passing to each other to set up shot after shot until finally Gray planted one past Natick's red-hot goalie. M.E.B. just didn’t have the legs for three periods of hockey and net minder Anthony Bocchino’s frustration began to show as Natick relentlessly crashed the net and scored.
BANTAM AAA (13-14 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 4, Andover 1
Volpe Rink, North Andover MA
Bantam AAA's hit the ice at beautiful Merrimack College to take on Andover. The Andover boys jumped out early with a quick, loose puck goal 2 minutes in. As the 1st period wound down, momentum began to switch in favor of M.E.B. At the 9 minute mark of the second period, with M.E.B. short-handed, the Nick Salgado show began. Breaking in from the far side, Salgado, in all alone, unloaded a wrist shot snipe picking the top corner glove side just under the bar to tie the game at 1 all. The final period had full momentum in our favor with Salgado getting yet another short-handed breakaway, only to be stoned by the glove he beat earlier. After a nice penalty kill, Mike DeFilippo nearly drove it home with Salgado there to jam it in for his second of the night but Salgado wasn't done yet. Picking up the puck in the neutral zone, he danced his way, splitting three defenders on the offensive blue line leading to yet another break away, this time juking the goalie and potting it into the open net for the hat trick. With an Andover defenseman threatening offensively on their own blue line, Salgado stole the puck in his own end, bursting off on a break-away and ringing his 4th goal of the game with 3 seconds on the clock giving M.E.B. 4-1 win. A well-rounded performance by the entire team. Setting up the victory were assists going to Jared Downey, DeFilippo and Noah Carlson.
BANTAM AA (13-14 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 3, South Boston 1
Cronin Rink, Revere MA
The Bantam AA’s played a new opponent, South Boston at Revere rink on Saturday, September 14th. It was an intense game with #97 Carson Tully scoring on a rebound to tie the game up at the end of the first. It stayed tied 1-1 throughout the second period. By the beginning of the third M.E.B. showed their horsepower with Marty Taylor #5 scoring a hard earned goal to make it 2-1. Throughout the game there was great goaltending by Thomas Guarino who continued to impress. M.E.B. took a few penalties that left them shorthanded in the third but first year Bantam #19 Curtis Taddeo was still able to put the puck in the net with a 3 on 5, ending the game with a two goal lead 3-1.
MIDGET (15-18 Years Old)
Malden/East Boston 3, North Shore Raiders 9
Allied Veterans Rink, Everett MA
Midgets played a non-league game against the North Shore Raiders. In the 1st period the Raiders took an early lead, scoring in the first minute. M.E.B. quickly retaliated with #16 Danny Valente scoring. By the end of the period the score is 2-4 with Nick Bertocchi, #37 putting the puck to the back of the net for M.E.B.’s second goal. M.E.B. skated with the select Raiders squad for the 2nd period to stay in the game with the team making some great plays, just unable to show it on the scoreboard. The 2nd period ended 3-6 with another goal by Valente, assisted by Bertocchi. No goal scoring by MEB in the third. The team played until the final whistle with the score of 3-9 which did not reflect the level of play.
