Mystic Valley Football Falls to Whittier

The Mystic Valley Eagles lost a hard fought game Friday night at home to Commonwealth Large school division power Whittier Tech by a score of 29-8.

Things looked bad early when after an Eagles punt, Whittier scored from 67 yards out on their first play from scrimmage. Both teams traded possessions and the quarter ended with a score of 7-0 Whittier. Whittier marched down the field again midway through the 2nd quarter and punched it in again, this time adding a two point conversion for a 15-0 lead. The Eagles responded before the half with a 58 yard touchdown run by Senior Calvin Phung. A two point run by Amro Ali made it 15-8.

With just under 2 minutes in the half the young Eagles squad caught a bad break when on 3rd and long freshmen defensive back Jayden Jean made a great play to deflect a pass only to see the Whittier receiver make a spectacular catch deep in Mystic Valley territory. Just two plays later Whittier hit pay dirt again and went into the half with a 21-8 lead.

The Eagles kicked off to start the 2nd half and got a great play from Senior Amro Ali who forced a fumble that was recovered by Sophomore Robbie Cummings. Unfortunately for the Eagles their red zone troubles continued and they were not able to capitalize. The defense of the Eagles was able to hold Whittier off for much of the day until late in the 4th when Whittier scored again and added the 2 point conversion for the final score of the game.

Mystic Valley Crew Rows in NH Meet

The Mystic Valley crew team had its most successful day of this season at the New Hampshire Championships Regatta held on Sunday in Pembroke, NH.  In the heavily competitive varsity 4’s event with a total of over 30 crews entered in both girls and boys divisions the Boys Junior 4+ comprised of: cox Alex Green, stroke and the captain: Marco Hanna, Ben Horton, Mario Hanna and Joseph Finn, rowed over the 2 mile course on Merrimack River finishing in 8th   position out of 32 boats.  Their time of 17:36 38 was just 10 seconds off the 4th place.  In addition, they improved by 2 min and 45 sec. since their last race at Textile Regatta two weeks ago when they finished in 25th place.  If this boat continues improving in the same fashion, the boys’ varsity 4+ will have a great chance to medal at the Mass Public Schools Rowing Championships which will be held on Oct. 28th at Lowell, MA.

The Girls Varsity 4+, which was comprised of cox Jessica Lieu, stroke Fayrouz Farhane, Isha Sharma, Asha Kurian and Amanda Valenti experienced equipment problems after running aground and as a result their race was delayed by 40 min.  Despite these unfortunate circumstances, they still finished in 27th position out of 35 boats in a time of 20 minutes 41 seconds.

In addition, the Women’s Jr. Novice 4+ comprised of: cox. Amy Nguyen, stroke: Emma Willis, Bridgette Tully,  Maaya Alagappan  and Nancy Nguyen at the bow position,  did a very respectable job by finishing 8th out of 15 entered boats.  Finally, the Boys Varsity Jr. 4+ B boat comprised of stroke Raphael Stigliano, Seamus Gallagher, Ben Lieu and bow: Devin Burke, finished in 22nd place out of 32 boats entered.
