Mystic Valley Killer Whales Beat Wayland

The Mystic Valley Killer Whales Swim Club stunned a previously unbeaten Wayland Junior Warriors swim club in a very exciting meet held at the Bayrd Natatorium on Saturday, March 3rd. The Wayland team is the perennial powerhouse in the league and was said to have not lost a meet in over 10 years but the Killer Whales were also undefeated and proved more than ready when the Junior Warriors came out to play.

“ The pool is still rippling!  The kids did an outstanding job against a powerful Wayland team. The really impressive part of the victory is that every age group, girls and boys, contributed significantly to the win.  If you took the Meet Program before the meet started, and looked at the best times for each swimmer in each event, Wayland should have won by approximately 34 points instead the Killer Whales won by 22 (a 56 point swing!).  Our swimmers just out-swam them!” said an elated coach Lee Kinnon who was still smiling three days after the meet.  “The kids set 19 Team Records and 6 League records.  When you consider that there are only 66 events that means the swimmers set a record in better than 1 out of 4 events!”

The Killer Whales started out on the right track when 10 year old Jenna Swanson shaved nearly 4 seconds off of her best time to grab a second place finish in the first event. Fellow 10 year old, Jake Williams immediately followed suit in the next race dropping over 3 seconds from him personal best to win the 100 yard IM. In the fourth event both Michael Leung and Ryan Kinnon cut over 3 seconds from their best times to finish first and second in the Boys 11-12 100 yard IM. Caroline Williams followed up by knocking two seconds off of her best time to win the girls 13-14 100 yard IM and Christian Kinnon and Cameron Sullivan then teamed up to take the top two spots in the boys race with Sullivan dropping an incredible 4 seconds off of his time.

The excellent performances continued as Tia Anthony won the 5-6 year old race dropping over 2 seconds and Caroline Dailey, Chloe Ascolillo, Genevieve Casucci and Alyssa Toppi each dropped over two seconds in their races to gain points for the team. In the butterfly Skyler Forbes (5), Bryant Nguyen (8!), Maggie Finn (5), Samantha McGlynn (2) and Andy DiFiore (4) all cut their best times to score points for the Killer Whales.

The younger swimmers continued to impress in the backstroke as Derek Aquino, Jacob Ribaudo and Alyssa Toppi each dropped more than two seconds from their personal bests. Michael Miller and Jared Swanson took 1st and 2nd in the 7-8 backstroke , and Lucia Quesada-Nylen broke a team record to win the 13-14 backstroke.  In the breaststroke, Caroline Dailey cut 3 seconds from her best time to add to the Killer Whales total.  Breaststroke wins by Joe Cirame, Chris Miller, Sofia Antonucci and Ryan Kinnon continued to build momentum.

In what would prove a turning point in the meet, Mystic Valley came in first and second in the 13 and 14 year old girls’ breaststroke. Ava Asai-Sarris came in first by a wide margin and Colleen McGlynn who was in fourth for the whole race rallied to come in second. Ken Antonucci, and Catherine Poirer won the next two races and in the final individual event of the day, Giuseppe Iacovene, Wilson Tran & Nick Antonucci posted a 1,2,3 finish in which they all swam their personal best.

To close out the meet the Killer Whales won an amazing 8 of the 10 relay races! The highlights of the relays were the boys’ 11-12 yard 200 yard freestyle where the team of Marvin Josephat, Fred DeNisco, Vikram Alagappan and Michael Lueng, set a new league record, the boys 13-14 team of Robert Cummings, Cam Sullivan, Kenny Antonucci & Christian Kinnon cut 5 seconds from their best time, and the girls’ 15-18 200 yard freestyle which was extremely loud because the crowd sensed the impending upset. In the race, the team of Catherine Poirier, Emily Williams, Amelia Quesada Nylen and Fallon Bushee shattered their personal best by over 8 seconds and sealed victory for the Killer Whales.
