Mystic Valley Girls Grab Senior Night Win

The Mystic Valley girls’ varsity basketball team celebrated their seniors on Tuesday night in style defeating Greater Lawrence Tech 54-34 to clinch the outright Commonwealth Athletic conference title. The senior players (Dominique Charles, Tiffany Gomez, Kathryn McPherson, Captain Joanna Petras and Captain Jordan Sullivan) all were honored and presented with a rose from Coach Jason Cantwell.

The girls raced out to an 18-6 advantage after the first quarter and never looked back. With 4 minutes left in the game, all 5 seniors took the court at once for the first time this season and were able to close out the game. Offensively, the girls were led by freshman Meghan Foley (23 points) and junior Tania Fabo (11 points) and sophomore Jessica Phinney (10 points).

Coach Cantwell has high praise for each of his seniors:

Dominique Charles: “Dominique decided to wait until the last minute to decide to play basketball this season and I couldn’t be happier with her decision to play. I’ve had the pleasure of coaching her the past two years in volleyball as well. I wish her success in everything she does after Mystic Valley”.

Tiffany Gomez: “Tiffany is perfect embodiment of our team. She has fun when its’ time to have fun, and is serious when its’ time to be serious. Her role the past two years has been to shut down and frustrate the opposing team’s best player and she has performed this role successfully whenever called upon”.

Kathryn McPherson: “Kathryn has been our primary defensive force this season. She has the height, size and speed to cover anyone in the league. Her desire to win is unmatched in our locker room and I couldn’t be happier with the way she has performed this season. She has been a great soccer player for the school (CAC All Star defender) and is exactly what we as teachers and coaches look for in our student athletes”.

Joanna Petras: “Joanna decided to return to playing basketball her junior year and quickly established herself with her commitment to defense, rebounding and winning. She has a winning attitude and will do whatever it takes to help the team win. The best decision I made as a coach this season was naming Joanna a captain”.

Jordan Sullivan: “Jordan has been a 4 year varsity fixture as shooting guard/small forward. She just recently eclipsed the 500 point mark in her career (one of a select few to do so at Mystic Valley) and has been our most consistent rebounder this season despite only being 5’4. She is a 3 sport athlete and has selected as a CAC All Star in all 3 sports she plays (volleyball, basketball, softball). Jordan, along with the other 4 seniors will be greatly missed going into next season.
