Mystic Valley Boys' Varsity Basketball Makes Tourney

The game was thrilling, and winning it qualified the Eagles for the state tournament.

In a thrilling game from start to finish, the Mystic Valley boys’ varsity basketball team defeated Greater Lawrence Regional High School, 54-51, away from home on Tuesday, January 24.

With the win, the Eagles (10-2 overall, 6-0 in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference), officially qualified for the state tournament for the fifth consecutive year.

“Like every team in Massachusetts, making the state tournament is the ultimate goal, and I’m glad we secured a berth at this time of the regular season,” said Mystic Valley head coach Tony Ferullo.  “I’m proud of my players for their accomplishment and they deserve all the credit in the world.”

Against Greater Lawrence, a very quick and athletic CAC Upper Division squad, the Eagles scratched and clawed from beginning to end.  Mystic Valley led by eight points at halftime (28-20), and only two digits (41-39) after three quarters.

The fourth quarter was a cardiac arrest special, with everyone holding onto their seats during each possession.  It was a seesaw battle for the entire fourth frame, with the Eagles holding on at the end for the impressive victory.

Mystic Valley’s top scorer for the game was senior guard Joey Foley, who scored a career-high 23 points (15 of them coming in the second half).

“Joey was definitely the star of the game.” said Ferullo.  “He played his heart out at both ends of the court, and it seemed every time we needed a basket, he was in the right place at the right time.”

The Eagles’ next two games are Friday, January 27, when they travel to Lexington to play Minuteman High School in a 4:45 p.m. contest, and Sunday, January 29, when they host Maimonides High School of Brookline in a 3:30 p.m. tipoff.
