Mystic Valley Baseball and Softball Teams Score Playoff Wins

Tourney Wins

Baseball and Softball Teams Win First Tourney Games

Both the Mystic Valley baseball and softball teams won their first game in the MIAA Tourney on Sunday.

The softball team was the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Small Division Champion but for a couple of innings looked like they were going to be knocked out in the first round despite having ended the season with a 15-5 overall record and a 10 game win streak.

Mystic Valley jumped out to an 5 - 1 lead after 2 innings behind home runs from Juniors Rachel Tortora and Jordan Sullivan. NE Metro battled back and Mystic Valley found itself down 10 - 7 going into its last at bat. The crowd of Mystic Valley supporters in attendence looked very nervous but the Mystic Valley girls did not. As they came off of the field to get ready for the bottom of the seventh the girls looked confident in their ability to mount a comeback.

Senior Marisa Cagno tripled to lead off the seventh and Junior Michelle Doherty followed with a text book squeeze bunt to run the score to 10 - 8. Eight grader Meghan Foley followed with a base hit to left putting runners at first and third with Junior Jordan Sullivan coming to the plate. Jordan delivered with a triple to clear the bases and even the score at 10. After a fly ball out, Senior center fielder Sara Marraccino showed why she won the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Small League MVP this year with a walk off single to left to win the game. "This team shows the character that is instilled in them at the school where every player supports each other and therefore they are never out of a game" said Coach Barry.

Mystic Valley banged out 17 hits including 3 each by Sara Marraccino, Rachel Tortora and Jordan Sullivan. "A great deal of credit goes out to the NE Metro team that played an outstanding game in the loss" said coach Barry.

Mystic Valley will face Greater Lowell on Tuesday night at 4 pm at Anderson Field in Malden.

The baseball team earned the 6th seed in the tourney and opened the tourney at home against Rockport. The boys had a much easier time of it as they hopped out to a 6-0 run lead in the first and never looked back winning 9-2. They will play at Matignon on Monday afternoon at 4:00. The boys split two close games against Matignon during the regular season.
