Mystic Valley Girls Win Two, Make Tourney

The Mystic Valley Lady Eagles qualified for the MIAA tournament this past Friday by virtue of a 44-27 victory over Chelsea High. The win, their 10th of the season, did not come easily as Chelsea was able to make things difficult for the Lady Eagles in the first half. “It was a 4-6 point game for most of the first half” said Coach Jason Cantwell. “We weren’t able to start to pull away until the final minutes of the first half, the surge was keyed by a Bailey Chiccuarelli steal and basket to make the lead 10 at the half(25-15). In the third quarter, the Lady Eagles extended the lead to 14 before eventually settling for a 17 point victory.

The lady Eagles were led in the scoring column by freshman Meghan Foley (12 points, 8 rebounds and 7 steals), sophomore Paulina Petras (8 points, 11 rebounds) senior Jordan Sullivan (8 points) and sophomore Jessica Phinney (7 points). “I was proud of the girls today, they played through some adversity early when the calls weren’t going our way, we were able to keep our composure and play through it. It was by far our best game from the free throw line as well (7 for 9).

The girls got a leg up in the race for the CAC Division 2 title Tuesday with a 47-35 at Greater Lawrence. The girls broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring Greater Lawrence 23-2. Freshman Meghan Foley again led the way with 20 points, and Junior Tania Fabo came off the bench to score 10 points and grab 17 rebounds.

With the win the girls improve to 11-2 on the season and 6-0 in conference play. The girls can clinch at least a share of the conference title with a win next Friday, at home against PMA. The girls return to the court next Tuesday at Notre Dame Academy of Tyngsboro.
