Mystic Valley Baseball and Softball Knocked Out of Tourney

It was a tough weekend for Mystic Valley sports as both the baseball and softball teams got knocked out of the MIAA Tourney.

The baseball team fell to West Roxbury by a score of 10-4. Despite the loss, coach Ernie Ardolino, was proud of his team that exceeded expectations by making the tourney. After the game he said that: “ This first year flew by...I believe it was a successful year for the baseball program, we didn't have the overall success like we did the past 2 years but we have put ourselves in position to compete in the CAC for the next few years”.

On Saturday, the  #18 seeded Mystic Valley Girls Softball lost to #2 seeded Mt. Alvernia by a score of 7 – 6 on Saturday in front of a great crowd of Mystic Valley supporters that travelled to Newton.  After scoring one small ball run in the top of the first, the Mystic Valley offensive machine was shut down by the Mt. Alvernia pitcher and quite a few solidly hit balls that were just hit “right at ‘em”.

Going into the top of the seventh, the Lady Eagles were down by a score of 7 – 2 and had only two hits for the game.  Senior Jordan Sullivan singled on a 3 – 2 pitch to start the seventh and soon after senior Michelle Doherty reached on an error.  With two outs and their playoff hopes almost gone, senior Rachel Tortora doubled over the center fielders head to make the score 7 – 4.  Next up, Senior Violet Sullivan drew a four pitch walk and a passed ball put runners on second and third.  Freshman Bailey Chiccuarelli (who had entered the game as a defensive replacement in the fourth inning) came up to bat and stroked the second pitch to center field, scoring two more and making the game 7 – 6.  With the crowd roaring, Mystic Valley finally made its last out with the tying run on second base.

After the game, a disappointed but quite proud coach Scot Barry said “it has been a characteristic of these girls from last year, they will not quit.  We are always in a game, no matter what the score or who we are playing.  As a coach, I couldn’t ask for any more.”
