A grassroots group of residents and local organizations, Malden Reads invites the community to read the same book and participate in activities based on the book and its themes.

The 2014 featured selection is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. It’s a true story about Lacks whose unique cells were collected without her knowledge in 1951 and are still used in medical research.

Lacks, however, remained a virtual unknown until the book was written by a science journalist, who saw a photo of Lacks and resolved to learn her story by making many visits to the surviving members of Lack’s family.

Themes of the book include the importance of extraordinary contributions from ordinary people, privacy, civil rights, economic injustice, and modern medicine ethics.

Malden Reads will host a grand opening celebration at the Malden Public Library on Thursday Feb. 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
