School Department Fiasco Again?

Annual battle to control public school budget rages in City Hall.

Another May/June budget battle to eviscerate the Malden Public Schools led by councilor Kinnon(again). Transferring control of the janitors to the city. Then transferring the budget for the janitors to the city. Then increasing the budget for the janitors by an additional $600,000 with money, that doesn't exist, seems ludicrous unless you want to mangle management of the Malden Public schools.
This type of management overhead was tried before and failed. Putting the city in charge of directly managing the internal maintenance of the schools was a bureaucratic brick wall, that the Malden school department spent years getting out from under.
If we DON'T add money to the cleaning budget, DON'T bureaucratize the school's ability to clean itself and instead investigate better ways to manage the cleaning of the schools, that seems like a far more fiscally responsible way to proceed.
Let's all hope this new annual effort to inflict managerial damage on our public schools gets defeated.
I have confidence in our school department, our superintendent and our school committee as a whole.
