YOUR TURN: Malden's Worst Drivers?

If it were up to you, where would you set up Malden's latest speed trap?

We've all had the feeling - a driver cuts you off, ignores a red light or speeds past a group of children and our sense of justice kicks in: “How great would it be if a cop saw that?”

Bearing in mind that city hall decision-makers often read our comment section, we wanted to throw this question out to our readers: in a perfect world, where would you set up the city's next speed trap?

Your neighborhood cross street? A school bus stop? Somewhere along your commute? Tell us where the city should set up a net for speeders in our comments section below.

Winter St!!! Exiting Oak Grove Train Station...been almost hit several times trying to cross. People speed up looking to the left while taking a right turn!

Laurel St., halfway down towards Webster. It's parked up on both sides, a 2-way street, and people go down there as though it's the expressway. I've gotten honked at and flipped off on more than one occasion for going 15 and slowing down to turn into my own driveway. Also, 60 and Commercial at the Malden Center T. People treat the red lights there as though they're a suggestion.

There are good reasons when you buy a car and live in Malden it is best to get a "$h!tBox". Keep the good one garaged until you drive away.
Anita August 02, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Lebanon and Valley Streets - you can't cross when getting off the bus, cars speed around the bus. In the morning the kids can't cross the street because cars are speeding by.
Tina August 02, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Maplewood St. from Eastern Ave to the Square. They speed through the lights trying to get through ALL the lights. I've even seen Maplewood Street used as raceway!

Glenwood Street, from Highland Ave. to Washington Street light. Trying to cross at Summer street, on foot or in a car, is a nightmare, not to mention the curves in front of the glenwood school, cars cross over the lines every time I drive there.

Does the Malden PD even own a radar gun? This has to be the only place on the planet where you can ignore traffic laws and get away with it.

Lebanon St - I've been passed at 30MPH by vans and motorcycles. Sylvan st - always awesome to see cars catch a little air going from Forest to Lebanon after they pass the school

Anywhere on Route 60!!!

I believe it's less about any one intersection and more about the terrible habits of today's drivers. Right on Red requires a FULL STOP - but few do that. At stop signs many drivers are continuing the old, no longer legal, cars 2 and 3 and go through the stop sign without a full stop (this was invalidated when the implemented Right on Red). Drivers turn across multiple lanes of traffic even when they cannot see the other oncoming lanes. Drivers turning left will begin their turn before they've even past the crosswalk on their on side of the intersection and cut across the oncoming traffic lane of the street their turning onto. These are bad driving habits that mean they're driving on the wrong side of two streets when making their turn. If drivers would freshen up on today's actual driving laws (available from the registry) and start practicing them, we'd have much safer roads for pedestrians and drivers alike.

Weed out the crappy drivers - require a road test with every renewal.
Antonio August 02, 2012 at 03:19 PM
When they cut the numbers of the police I would guess this is what happens.
ME August 02, 2012 at 06:48 PM
If you step in front of a moving vehicle, it's gonna hurt. Stay on the sidewalk until it's safe to cross.
Freddy August 02, 2012 at 08:14 PM
Until the police department has the amount of policemen it is supposed to I can't imagine this getting any better.
AnnieOMalden August 02, 2012 at 09:18 PM
Freddy: Forgive me if I am mistaken but I have a feeling our city officials will answer your question with: hey! How about if we install CAMERAS at all these bad intersections and ticket those we catch on camera! Yeah, that's how we'll raise money by ticketing people! Then we can build apartment buildings filled with more people we can tax! Forget about bringing JOBS and BUSINESSES to Malden--a couple more food trucks will do! We don't need more police, we need more taxpayers!

Well the Mayors office thing Red Light Photo Enforcement cameras will stop speeders. When I talked to him about Lynn street and the accidents on that road, the answer I got was to call my Reps and ask for the cameras. The cameras are the biggest scam, easy to beat the ticket and banned in many states. The cameras we have up now don't even work half the time.
Michael G August 03, 2012 at 01:58 AM
I meant to say "Thinks", my smart phone even knows that office does not do that. Watch Linden Square after Dunkin Donuts goes in. It is bad enough now. But the councillor of Ward 8 is a pro as messing things up. Look at the new CVS. Look at how Lynn street had 3 different speeds. She had signs put up without a proper traffic study. Then thinks the potholes on Lynn street are "great" because it stops people from speeding.

Intersection of cross and walnut st, i live near there and it's just about a nightly occurrence where people on motorcycles start all the way down at the beginning of walnut street and go at least 60mph blowing the red-light and going all the way to everett. I've seen them almost cause an accident several times.
Jennifer August 03, 2012 at 02:11 PM
Accident there just last night, Main St @ Eastern Ave & Madison St. Also Main St @ Charles St. There is no dedicated pedestrian light @ Eastern & Madison and drivers constantly turn right on red without stopping (and most times barely looking). @ Main & Charles the button for pedestrians is only at one post instead of 3 or 4 where pedestrians might want to press a button to cross.
moxie August 04, 2012 at 06:18 AM
If you're driving, put your stinking phone away. If walking, pull your head out of your...phone. Quit sauntering into the road while you text, play angry birds, or update your status to "Just strollin' into the street."
Meggle August 04, 2012 at 05:58 PM
The pedestrian cross walk at Eastern & Madison is insane and dangerous. I had at least one person scream out of their car at me when I tried to walk with the pedestrian light, so I don't use that cross walk.
Marc Levine August 04, 2012 at 06:21 PM
Highland Ave and Charles St. ......Pearl St. and Charles St. Almost T boned at both intersections by cars not even stopping for red lights. Each one probably less then 10 feet away from getting hit
LI August 05, 2012 at 02:38 AM
Washington Street and Kneeland Street. I needed to turn left on to Washington Street and I turned right and I took a long way to get to where I wanted to avoid car accident...
Michael G August 05, 2012 at 04:25 AM
You should make a article on pot holes. I know the administration reads this because they call when they don't like what I post...maybe they can read on pot holes or how dark Salem street is (high crime area in the dark).
Jennifer August 05, 2012 at 07:48 PM
Meggie we used to live on Meridian St. My CHILDREN had to cross there to get to school. Talk about scary! Whoever designed that fiasco was probably insane. To top it off I've seen with my own eyes a car go through the intersection against the light. I was on Main St in the right lane heading towards Everett, a cruiser was in the left lane going to make the left onto Eastern Ave and totally ignored the car that came off of Madison against the red light to turn left onto Main St heading towards the square.
