Red Cross Worker from Malden Flies to Philippines For Typhoon Relief

Louis Matnog, an American Red Cross worker from Malden, recently flew to the Philippines to provide assistance after Typhoon Haiyan ravaged the country.

Louis Matnog, an American Red Cross worker from Malden, recently flew to the Philippines to provide assistance after Typhoon Haiyan ravaged the country, according to a CBS Boston report.

For the next month, Matnog will be working at the site where one of the largest tropical storms ever recorded killed at least 1,000 people, according to the report.

“This is huge,” Matnog told CBS Boston as he packed disaster supplies Saturday ahead of his trip. “The impact of this is really hard for them to face right now.

“It’s survival … flooding … plus the wind they have experienced … the rainfalls and everything.”

The Maldonian left Saturday night for the Philippines from Logan International Airport in Boston, according to the report. The Philippines, comprised of more than 7,000 islands in the western Pacific Ocean, sustained significant damage due to 200 mile per hour winds and 20-foot waves that led to major flooding, the report adds.
