Malden High Students Support Freshman Battling Cancer

The student-run 'Malden Against Cancer' club is rallying around a freshman with osteosarcoma.

This year, Malden High’s “Malden Against Cancer” club is honoring Karina Moeira, a freshman at the high school battling osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.

Moeira was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2011 and then went into remission after treatment. However, the cancer returned last fall.

The club’s leaders, students Thao Pham and Philip Glynn, recently met with Malden Mayor Gary Christenson to tell him more about their efforts.

On Saturday, June 14, the club is hosting a family-fun celebration in honor of Moeira from noon to 4 p.m. at the Linden school’s Hunting Field.

“These students are going above and beyond to support one of their classmates,” Christenson said. “I am proud to be the mayor of a city where out students have such a high level of care and commitment to one another.”
