Northeastern Marine Science Center Public Lecture Series: Graduate Student Research

Tuesday, March 11th at 7:00pm

Over the past 18 months, eight graduate students at the Marine Science Center have been taking part in an effort to help them communicate their research using interactive concept maps.  A technique developed by Cornell professor Joseph Novak, concept mapping is a tried and true method of conveying complex ideas in a visual format.  The Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence – Ocean Systems (COSEE-OS) at the University of Maine have taken concept mapping one step further by developing an online, interactive tool to present concept maps.  The benefits to the viewer are that a visual “story” is easier to follow.  Also, concepts presented may be hyperlinked to supporting materials such as photos, definition boxes, journal articles, charts, graphs, and videos, which allows a viewer to later probe the map for further information.

Come and hear graduate students presenting their research via concept maps, as well as learning about others via short videos produced to amplify others’ maps.
