A gathering of friendly Malden

Reads Committee members is hosting a Welcome-Back celebration at the new

Dockside restaurant at Riverview (270 Medford Street) on Wednesday, Jan. 29,

from 2 – 9 pm.

Come down for some great food

and company, and support the program. Guests can hear an update on this year’s

community read, The Immortal Life

of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.

Written by a

science journalist, the book is a fascinating and moving story of medicine and

family, and of how life is sustained in laboratories and in memory. It’s the

true story of a woman who was virtually unknown and yet her cells – which were

taken without her knowledge before she died more than 60 years ago – have been

one of the most important tools in the field of medicine.

Now in its fourth year, Malden

Reads is a reading program that encourages the community to read the same book

and then participate in a series of events and discussions based on themes from

the book.  The goal is to encourage

reading, promote the library and other city resources, and build community.

Guests at the Welcome-Back event

at Dockside can support the program by presenting Dining for Dollars

certificates at the beginning of the meal. The tickets ensure that 25 percent

of your tab that night will be donated toward Malden Reads. Tickets can be printed from this article or picked

up at MATV or the Malden Public Library.

We're also planning a raffle for

the occasion. Details on that are still coming together, but we’d very much

like to hear from anyone who has prizes to donate.

For more information on this

event or donating prizes, contact Jodie Zalk at 781-608-6938 or jodiezalk@yahoo.com.
