Malden Reads Community Jamboree

Malden Reads Community JamboreeSunday, October 20, 1:00 - 4:00PM

Salemwood School
Mark your calendars for the Malden Reads Community Jamboree on Sunday, Oct. 20 at the Salemwood School. This
free event is a celebration of reading and community, with exhibits and
activities for all ages, and even a Community Parade!

The
jamboree is hosted in collaboration with the Malden Neighborhood
Basketball League, which will run skill drills and contests for all ages
at the Salemwood Gym. Downstairs the cafeteria will host arts,
storytelling, and crafts, including an authentic Native American
teepee.

The
celebration will include a Parade of Community, where local groups and
organizations will join Malden Reads in a jamboree-style celebration of
community involvement.

Malden
Reads co-facilitator Jodie Zalk explains that the event will be, in
part, a grand finale for Malden Reads 2013, which invited the entire
community to read “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian,” by
Sherman Alexie. “This event will bridge last year's program with this
coming year's. We even plan to announce our next book selection at the
event!"

The Parade of Community is scheduled to take place at 2:30 in the gymnasium. The idea for the procession is borrowed from the Native American pow wow, a traditional ceremony of gathering together. Each tribe that participates gets recognition by being announced as they join the larger procession. The joy is in being a part of the whole, but not losing your own identity. Organizations that have sponsored, collaborated, or participated in Malden Reads are invited to be part of the procession. If your group is interested in participating, please contact Malden Reads volunteer Mike Guarino at guynexta@yahoo.com. Parade participants are also invited to have a table at the event.

 Attached is a flyer for
the Community Jamboree. Help us spread the word, if you can! Malden
Reads is grateful for your help in promoting literacy, a love of reading
and community-building in Malden. Hope to see you at the Jamboree!
