View from the Other Side!

Most days I coach individuals in how to prepare for job interviews: from what to wear and what to say to how much their body language says to a prospective employer.

A few weeks ago, the advice I give to my clients came in handy when I had to interview for a position. I was approached by a large hospital to conduct workshops to trainees on how to adhere to their dress code policy and dress professionally in their internships. 

Although I was excited at the opportunity, I must admit I felt a little fear at the whole interview process. Now understand, generally I have no problems with interviews - remember, it is what I do and am generally good at it - but so much was riding on this in terms of additional revenue to Tailored For Success, my nerves got the best of me. 

Thoughts like: "What will I wear?" "What will I say?" "Will they Like Me?" kept running through my head. So the teacher became the student as I prepared for my panel interview and pilot workshop.

The panel interview consisted of me and five individuals asking me all kinds of questions about professional appearance, clothing, dealing with stressful situations. Did I mention a panel interview, what could be more stressful?

Then came the "pilot" workshop, when the same five individuals watched as I conducted a workshop to a group of trainees. This felt, like what the inquisition must have felt like, but as soon as I started I forgot they were watching and just engaged the group I was presenting to. 

Soon, nothing mattered but that I knew my subject well, knew what I wanted them to take away and that if I didn't get this "job" life would go on.  By relaxing, staying true to what I know and being myself, I believe helped to overcome the stress of all this and ultimately land the contract. 

So, I write this blog to say, yes sometimes interviews are difficult, stressful and downright unfair.  However, know that if you stay true to yourself and enjoy the journey things will turn out alright. 

If not, there are plenty more opportunities out there and the right one will come along. When one door closes another opens. Enjoy the Journey!
