International Women's Day

Reflections from the Simmons College 15th Annual International Women's Day Breakfast.

On such a beautiful day, I hope everyone stops to celebrate the women in their lives to honor International Women's Day!

In some countries, this day is designated as a national holiday to mark 100 years of the struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.  I thought I'd start the day off right by attending the Annual International Women's Day breakfast at Simmons College.  The focus today was on "Ending the Violence Against Women: Pathways to Power, Resilience and Leadership. Together with over 500 women, from all socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds, religious affiliations, and ages we heard from three panelists who have been working on women's issues for years.

Clearly, this blog would be pages long if I relayed all the great antidotes, knowledge and inspiration these women gave through their presentations.  What I can say is by attending events like these, you get a renewed sense of the history of how far we (as women) have come, the struggles that remain and the fact that the issues we speak of are not just "women's issues" but issues that effect everyone.  What I was most proud of was the fact that each speaker acknowledged the men (in the room and in general) who also care about women's issues and who lend their voices in support of us. To them, I say thank you for your support and keep up the good work!
