Lewis Defeats Medeiros for State Senate Seat

State Rep. Jason Lewis won Tuesday's Special Election for the 5th Middlesex District seat.

Congresswoman Katherine Clark’s former State Senate seat will remain with the Democratic Party.

State Rep. Jason Lewis, a Democrat from Winchester, defeated Monica Medeiros, a Republican and alderman-at-large from Melrose, for the 5th Middlesex District seat Tuesday in a Special Election, according to a number of Lewis' colleagues on Twitter.

The district covers Malden, Melrose, Reading, Stoneham, Wakefield and precincts 1, 2, 3 and 8 in Winchester.

Lewis served in the Massachusetts House for five years. His 31st Middlesex District House seat, which includes Stoneham and Winchester, is now up for grabs.

Lewis defeated two challengers in the Democratic primary. Medeiros ran unopposed in the Republican primary.

Lewis lives in Winchester with his wife Susan, a middle school science teacher, and their two daughters, Sophie, 14, and Jessie, 11.
