Malden Historical Society - The Barretts and Their Dyeworks:Industry, Business, and Family

The dyeing business started by William Barrett in 1804 was one of Malden’s first industries and the town’s largest single employer in the first half of the 19th century—yet little is generally known about Barrett, his family, or his business. Learn more about this fascinating episode in Malden’s history—and why it is more than a local story from Linda Thorsen as the Malden Historical Society begins its 126th year.  All are welcome.  The program is free.  Handicapped accessible.

Linda is a member of the Malden Historical Society and has been a MaldenArts volunteer since the group’s founding in 2006.  She holds a BA from Swarthmore College in English Literature, an Ed.M. (Master of Education) from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and is currently working toward a Master of Liberal Arts with a Concentration in History at Harvard Extension School, focusing on the history of the United States in the early 19th century.
